some great news on the vaccine front

dengue is one of those things you need to worry about when you go to visit family in south america and other place like that( hawaii is now also dealing with dengue)
I really hope that this vaccine which mexico approved really works and is available here in the united states in the very near future!

Only the Big Island has Dengue–about 122 cases. It happens periodically, when someone visits an infected area and carries the infection to HI unwittingly.

One of the pitchers on the Detroit Tigers, Anibal Sanchez, had a baby that died from Dengue in Venezuela when he was just starting out in the majors. I remember reading his story and thinking how sad it was. Mosquitoes are the most deadly creatures on earth, and anything that can be done to help prevent their illness for people who are vulnerable is huge.

movemetoo hopefully the dengue will become much more controlled with this vaccine but the same mosquitoes got a “new” gift up their sleeve.

Mosquito born diseases are frightening. My neighbor was the first person hospitalized with West Nile in my state when that disease reached us about 10 years ago. He survived, but it was very touch and go and he needed to be in a care home for weeks after hospital intensive care. The disease left him with a permanent slight limp. I always wonder if that West Nile carrying mosquito flew over from my yard.

I’m just back from Cambodia where dengue is rampant. Believe me, I never went any where without my picaridin or DEET. I hope the vaccine is effective, cheap and widely available.

picaridin–is probably safer but less available in the united states.
deet has been around for 60-70 years ?? but it can damage clothing and glasses.

And now I’ve been reading that chikungunya is making it’s way into the US too, which is carried by the same mosquitoes as Dengue. I guess it’s horribly painful for those who are infected.

chikungunya needs a vaccine real quick too!

I found the picaridin on Amazon after seeing the Consumer Reports review that it was safer and more effective than DEET. I didn’t see any mosquitoes near me in Cambodia although I know they were present.

there is a big sporting/hunting /outdoor store near me I got some of the sawyer fisherman picaridin .
the supermarkets ,drug stores just have the basic deet. consumer reports put the sawyer product as their numero uno. it was not anymore expensive than the other brands. so now I have two products to buy at that supersize big box store…thermal underwear and picardin repellent.

At a wedding we attended in August, one of the favors we all got was a “bling band” which is a colorful vinyl bracelet that has insecticide on the band to make you unattractive to mosquitoes. We haven’t tried it out yet, but it’s said to be quite effective. It’s still in protype model, but hopefully will finish trials and be widely available soon.

from usatoday…they did a semi semi semi scientific test including the bracelet.

That’s not his product. His was tested by a university in New Mexico and shown to be quite effective. I will try to find it and post the link.

2nd country approves dengue vaccine…

Well, that’s good news for HI, as there continue to be cases of dengue fever on the Big Island of Hawaii. Hope it is approved by FDA soon.
