And not to forget you need to take 9 credits during summer at Florida publics - so a summer start isn’t necessarily bad.

Thanks! He is less interested in the Florida schools. We are planning to visit Purdue and the CA schools (Merced, Riverside (not got in), LMU, Fullerton, Long Beach (not in), etc). No longer planning a FL trip

Congrats! My son was accepted into the Motorsports Engineering major at Purdue too. We’ll definitely visit Indy to get a better sense of the program, campus, and surrounding city.

Late Jan update!
Kid got into Rutgers NB campus for mech eng. Fin Aid: I think $25k ish. Kid not too interested in NJ.
Also got into Northeastern today (mech eng, but n.u.in program where 1st semester/year is abroad). This one looks interesting. No Fin Aid yet 
any thoughts? This is getting tough and CA schools not all out yet.

Congrats - wow. NU says about NUIN: During the fall semester of The N.U.in Program, students who apply for financial aid are considered for need-based Northeastern funding only. All other aid opportunities, including federal and state grants, loans, and work-study funds can be used beginning with the spring semester for those who qualify.
What’s getting tough is choice.
Once you have all, you can figure out pros and cons of each.
Given you have a budget of either $40K or $50K (choose one), that’s the easiest way to make the initial cut. Congrats on so many options.

Congrats on the additional admits! Both schools have many wonderful things about them.
At this point in the process, it would really behoove your son to be reflective about what he really wants from his college experience and what’s a must have vs. nice to have. Then he can think about how each of his options matches up with what he wants, which should hopefully bring some clarity.

Update! Kid got into UC Santa Cruz and UC Riverside. Both in Robotics Engineering.
UC Riverside is now the frontrunner.
We’re planning to visit a few of the UCs during spring break in a couple of weeks.
What a journey it’s been so far. Looking forward to signing soon. It’s gonna be a UC. Kid wants to stay in state and ideally So Cal (Nor cal kids generally want to migrate south I think). Plus in state tuition helps me.
Robotics Engineering seems like a good fit for him (combo of mech elect + CS). Similar/same as mechatronics and I think/hope good outlook for jobs too.
Thoughts? This has been a great sounding board!

Are you still planning to visit Purdue ?
I mean if he wants to be in So Cal and UCR is the only So Cal school on the table, I think it’s wonderful. Are there any other So Cal schools where you await a decision ?
UCR is a very good school.

The process is crazy but if you find the right one, then it’s all worked out.

Based on the original list, there are CPSLO, UCSB, UCLA, UCI, UCSD, and SDSU.

My thought is FANTASTIC! Student has a happy landing spot in a major that sounds like a great fit – any other acceptances would be a bonus at this point. Well done!

Kid did not want to visit Purdue. Travel, weather etc. if it was the main campus it may have had more sway.
Agreed, Riverside seems like the right balance of everything. I also think he’ll enjoy the Robotics major a bit more than ME.
still waiting on UCSD, UCLA, UCSB, UCI…not holding out much hope. I think/hope we are done now. It’s been a journey. But without the journey, we may not have had the right discussions and thought process!

Note that while the traditional engineering majors like ME, EE, etc. at UCR are ABET accredited, the robotics major is not. I don’t know if that matters for employment in the robotics area.

Thanks. Given the robotics program at ucr started in 2022, I’d expect the program to be abet accredited by 2028/29 from what I’ve read…
You may want to ask UCR engineering directly about whether the robotics major is seeking ABET accreditation.
