Oh here is the deal. I attend a community college because it was cheaper and suits the needs I have. There is this girl there that last quarter and this quarter always complained about her station in life. She lives in the house authority (aka projects), has a young baby at home, no boyfriend/husband, no job, can’ afford day care to pick up more college hours, etc. One of her biggest gripes was that our work-study dept. never has an opening. I got one of the last opening last quarter in the maintenance dept.

Last week I was offered and today I accepted a part-time position as a para-pro in the GED/Academic Support dept. I will no long be a work-study person and make more money. So as soon as I gave my notice to my work-study job (I am finishing the week out), I went to her and told her about the opening and to talk to the dept. head for work-study.

This girl acted down right indignant about working in the maintenance dept. The way I see it is a job is better than no job when you have no money. I mean why complain all the time that you can not get a work-study but turn your nose up when one is offered to you.

I mean the job is not that hard more boring than anything. Wipe tables, clean windows, mop and vacuum once a week, pull classroom trash. That is just about all you do in that position.

As far as I am concerned she can quit complaining about not have a work-study to me because there is one there she is just to good for that type of work.

I don’t blame her for always complaining. Sure, complaining isn’t going to change anything, but maybe she just needs to vent and let it all out. Raising a baby isn’t easy, they are tons of work, plus she is going to school on top of that? She is probably overworked and tired. Doing a physical job is just going to add to that.

I am raising three kids (5, 7, 9) all of which have medical issues. Working at a minimum of part-time, plus school work, home work, house work, etc. At some point people have to quit complaining about how crappy your life is and do something to fix it.

My school is a small school, if she is holding out for a sit down work-study job she is gonna be holding for a while. People that get those few and far between jobs hang on to them for dear life. The only reason I was able to move to the job I am is because I know a lot of the staff at the school (perks of doing maintenance) that I had a bunch of people vouch for me before I even knew of the opening. I worked a job that I did not like until something better came along then gave notice.

Sometimes you have to do hard things to make things better down the road.

Don’t worry I am not worrying about her that because just venting I guess. Its hard for me to see people complain about their station in life but ,IMO, not really doing much to change it. Sure she is back in college now, but that is a year up the room or more before that pays off. Until then its either beg people for money because you don’t like your job options or do a job she might not like.

Here is thing because we have talked before about her situation. You have to be in classes or a job X amount of hours to get childcare help. She cannot get those hours because she has no way to pay for child care, but if she had a work-study job she would A) have those hours and B) be able to pay for childcare while she wants on the help to come through.

I have been a single mom with no dad at home helping (or in the picture at all) I worked as a waitress, housekeeper, cleaning hotels to make ends meet. I did not complain that I did not like those jobs (Ok I did but I actually went to work everyday) and not do them. I kept them till better things came up.

BTW I am not stressing out her situation just wondering why she does not do more to fix her situation.

I agree with PlattsburghLoser. Also everyone is different in this world and not everyone is going to have that kind of outlook. You, however, can at least go through life knowing that you put 100% towards everything that you do, but some people just aren’t hardwired to be that way.

Stop paying attention to her. She’s not you, hasn’t lived your life or your experiences and isn’t going to react to events the same way you have. To expect her to just handle it, because “you’ve gone through worse” is silly.

Either offer to help her to get through whatever she’s dealing with or ignore her.
