Some questions for current students

My S17 was admitted a while ago, but we are approaching decision time and have some questions for specific groups of current or recently graduated Pitt students.

  1. Any current students who participated in the Latin American themed community living: what was your experience like?
  2. Any current students who participate in the Latin Americna concentration (or Honors dual major program): can you say what your academic experience has been like? Was it hard to get grants to study abroad or participate in the summer opportunities in Latin America? What is the quality of the coursework and advising?
  3. Any current students who took courses at CMU, non-engineering/CS: my son has an interest in behavioral economics/decision science. How hard is it to arrange to take these classes? Are the CMU profs open to doing research with an academically strong Pitt undergrad?

as for the CMU question, historically, it just depends on the class openings. CMU kids get preference, but as long as there is space, there shouldn’t be an issue (generalized topic vs super specific). Most professors prefer working with motivated, enthusiastic, intelligent students; if your son puts himself out there, I’m sure he will have opportunities at CMU, if he can impress them just as much, if not more than a CMU student.

@PAwind98 My son was actually admitted to CMU with a merit scholarship – but even so it may not be affordable. And, if he went to CMU he would want to take some Pitt classes…

@psycholing It works relatively the same, no matter your “home” school, but since Pitt is relatively larger of a school, there may be more class positions available for CMU students. Best of luck in the decision making process!
