Some Quick Essay Question

Hello. I’m just finishing up my essays for MIT, but just wanted to ask a couple quick questions…

Essay 2 reads, “Although you may not yet know what you want to major in, which department or program at MIT appeals to you and why?” How much focus should be put on why MIT specifically? So far, I’ve described why I want to study math, but I don’t know if I should be including something specifically about MIT’s mathematics program.

Also, for Essay 4 “Describe the world you come from; for example, your family, clubs, school, community, city, or town. How has that world shaped your dreams and aspirations?,” I’ve described an influential teacher. I’m not completely sure if it answers the question completely because it’s only one part of the world I come from, but I’m not sure if I’m just reading too much into the question.

A third question I had regarding due dates: the due date for postmarking EA is Nov. 1. For online applications, what does this mean? Is it due by October 31 at 11:59 pm or 11:59 pm on November 1st (EST?)?

No need, unless there’s something you want to write.

It’s fine to describe only one part of the world you come from – there’s not enough room in the margins of the application to contain your entire world. :)

At the end of the day on November 1. In my capacity as the “been there, done that” voice of too much experience on this board, I would advise aiming to submit several hours before midnight.

thanks mollie!

You know, you two are the best, Chris and Mollie. Everything you two have posted have been extremely helpful, especially the little things. I sure hope that I’ll be able to meet students like yourselves at MIT if I am admitted.

Indeed. Thanks for the help Mollie and Chris
