'Some students have a background or story that is so central to their identity'

As for myself, i’ve grown up in a very conservative family with strong ethical background in Nepal, also in a society where a person with an anomalous sexual orientation is considered somewhat like a demon lol. would writing about how i condemn such beliefs but also fear losing my family or ‘letting them down’ make a good college essay, as it totally complies with the topic. or does it just sound like another applicant attracting sympathy by faking it?

I think that if handled right, that topic could make a very good essay. It’s (presumably) that conflicting background that has shaped your beliefs and attitudes, which is definitely “central to your identity”!

Thanks

Just tell a compelling story that does not sound like you’re faking it. Make it as descriptive as possible- use their dialogues, use incidents, make the readers see your situation through your eyes.
then you’re invincible.
