Does the author’s reasoning seem logical? How do you think this will impact his/her career? Any other comments?
I think the author chose very wisely. From the the sounds of it, he’s aiming to go onto med/pharmacy/grad school, so it definitely makes sense to stay at USF, where he’s assured a spot.
I also think it’s very true that you can find outstanding students to aspire to at any school, and that a student who wants to challenge him/herself can do so anywhere.
The author’s reasoning is very logical. He seems like a very intelligent, ambitious person who will shoot for the stars and attempt to achieve his goals. He’s also right; the choice of college will not impact his career. The opportunities the author pursues matters MOST. The article mentions he is in the BS/MD program which is a smart move. He can attain two degrees and is assured of being able to attain them at a good price.

His reasoning might seem logical, but shrouded by the true reason why he chose to remain at the University of South Florida. The son of a Nurse at a South Florida Hospital turn down Harvard University (URM) because his parents could not afford to send him there. The parent’s combined income did not allow him to qualify for any meaningful financial aid and the school was just not affordable. He chose to attend one of the 4-year university instate instead. So, cost of attendance might be the overriding issue here, when all is said and done.
I don’t question whether it the more appropriate choice for this person, as it appears to be a very rationale decision especially applied to aspirations of medical school. I do have a bit of curiosity at the FA juxtaposed against parent’s income, especially as to the Harvard example. My own personal experiences is that in most every instance, except for say exceptional income, say 250K+, the upper margin schools HYPS will make every effort to match and not lose a student. At present, rare do these institutions lose a student because of insufficient aid.
