I found out during my orientation this summer that your essay really does matter. All of the new freshman were in an assembly where one of the admissions people was reading out essay topics that were so unique, they got the students in. He announced my essay - which talked about getting kicked out of a taping of a tv show for showing up too often - and I was embaressed, but pleased to hear that it was essentially my essay that got me into college.

So don’t assume that the essay isn’t important, because to many colleges, it is. If your essay is off the wall or outstanding in some way, it can give you a huge boost. I had a lame GPA and am glad my essay was able to help me.

Good luck, class of '09!
