Something Witty

Hello, I’m a rising senior who is trying to get an accurate picture of my chances in the upcoming “season.” lol
I’m planning on doing NROTC and majoring in Econ/IR/French.
My top schools are Stanford, Harvard, and Duke
My middle schools are UPenn, Cornell, Georgetown
and I’m thinking about Vanderbilt, USC, and UVA (out of state)

Thank you for anything you have to say!

Speech and Debate (Secretary)
Varsity Cross Country

Job/Work Experience: tutor, political intern (150 hours, hopefully, still working on this)

Volunteer/Community service:
-100 hours at Church
-250 hours at Military Museum
-35 hours Hi-Step
-50 hours A+ tutoring

Summer Activities:

-Trip to France
-Journalism Summer Camp

Essays: I’m going to spend forever on them
Teacher Recommendation: fantastic (Euro/Econ Teacher and AP Lit teacher)
Counselor Rec: loves me, hopefully amazing

Other
State: Missouri
School Type: large, uncompetitive public
Ethnicity: white
Gender: male
Income Bracket: 80-100k
Hooks: none

Excellent, well-rounded stats.

You have a very competitive chance at all of those schools. Obviously Harvard would be the toughest, but I think with those numbers, you have a heck of a shot.

You have good chances everywhere.

Witty enough :)

Stanford, Harvard, and Duke: Of these, I would say you will most likely get into Duke (over 50% chance). Harvard and Stanford are what they are, so I would say you are extremely competitive and that it will ultimately boil down to whether or not they love your essays
My middle schools are UPenn, Cornell, Georgetown: You are in at Georgetown for sure. I would say your chances at UPenn are 50% or so, and at Cornell they are more like 60-70%. I would be surprised if you didn’t get into two of the three.
and I’m thinking about Vanderbilt, USC, and UVA: You will more than likely make it in at all three. I would be in total shock if you didn’t.

Chance me back? (my title is semi witty)

Thank you guys!
Does anyone see any problems with my profile that I should attempt to mend/enhance?

a lowly bump

please
any suggestions/comments would be appreciated!

Well, you’re val (assuming), your test scores are fantastic, and your ECs look great. A few people at my school last year and this year did something like the Communications Advisory Board (except for church) and most of them were accepted to Harvard. Obviously, that’s not the only thing that got them in, but things like that look great. Do you plan on talking about it in your essay at all?

Chance me back please? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/717572-another-one-those.html</a> Thanks!

EDIT: whoops, I guess I typed it wrong. Sorry! We admit 3-6 each year, and they are usually part of this church group.

“A lot of people” –> “a vast majority”

That makes it sound like you admitted a dozen kids to Harvard.

yeah I’m A val (my school is stupid and started weighted grades with the class below mine… so we have 32 4.0s atm sharing val (yes we all give speeches)… it’s so annoying)
I would be #2 if we had weighted grades bc one girl doubled up on AP sciences (Bio and Phys B) so she’s one ahead of me (if it mattered)

Yes I definitely want to write an essay about it =D, thank you for the advice! lol my school district sends 1 student to an ivy/elite school about once every other year (so typically 1/2000 goes to one… it’s pathetic)
I’ll be the 1 this year (hopefully XD)
We had a URM get into MIT last year and a genius (certifiable) get into Cornell 4 years ago. We had someone get into Stanford ~10 years ago (my dream school =D)

We’ve never had anyone get into Yale, Harvard, or Princeton, only 30% of the graduating class goes on to a 4 year college and 95% stay instate

my high school…

olly olly oxenfree

I really need some feedback…

Deng, you have one heck of a shot there, even to Harvard! Stanford most definitely, as well as Duke and everything else below. Your stats are amazing, as well. Those AP tests will be looked highly upon…

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/720727-chance-me-please-bit-long-but-still-thanks.html#post1062626610</a></p>

It’s an advantage that you are in Missouri. Harvard also gives great financial aid if you get in. One question: How can you be a National Merit Finalist if you are a junior?

Well XD MO’s cutoff is low-ish (around 212 usually) and I got a 224, so I’m assuming that I’ll get SF status.
I meant to say semi-finalist, but obviously I would like to be a finalist XD
but yes that was a misstep. I’d correct it, but CC has dumb editing rules

I’m hoping that being from MO benefits me bc I don’t really have any other hooks…

In September they will tell you you are a semi-finalist and you will have about a week to fill out the application. You will probably need to write about a 500-word essay summarizing your activities.

On the East Coast, the language and travel to Europe is not terribly unusual, but I am guessing that in Missouri it’s a little more rare. Your military museum volunteer work is pretty unusual too. I think that continued interest in activities is beneficial and sometimes you don’t see it because you lived it. Try grouping things that you have done over the years and show how different things you have done illustrate your interests.

National Merit Semi-Finalist status will bring several nice scholarship offers from schools in the west: Texas A & M, Arizona State, Oklahoma. Texas A & M offered travel money and Oklahoma offered a laptop.

Are you applying for ROTC scholarships and academies (question based on name) as well?

You are very perceptive MD Mom! I’m applying for NROTC, but I’ve decided against the USNA (though I decided after I created my CC username XD)

Thank you for the advice! I’m hoping that I can get that political internship to link all of my activities together under the umbrella of politics/foreign policy (for the academic stuff) and I’m hoping that my volunteering is unique-ish

last bump I promise
