Boola boola de Blasio!

Dante de Blasio appears to be well-qualified to be at Yale. He was a NY state champion in debate, and according to the Times an academic standout at Brooklyn Tech, a highly ranked NY City math-science magnet school. Plus his grandfather was a Yalie. So while being the son of the Mayor is no doubt a hook, he also has other hooks.
And it will be convenient for him to get home for breaks. There are lots of trains between New Haven and NYC.
lux et veritas—well done!
Do you have to be a New Yorker to care?
Not to split hairs, but Brooklyn Tech—along with Stuyvesant and Bronx HS of Science—is a selective high school, not a magnet school. Admission is based on the results of one test with an absolute cut-off. No extra points for hooks or celebrity.
Nope.
They’ll be hard to miss around town. The mayor is, what, like 10 feet tall? And so is Dante’s hair.
As Brooklynites and admitted lovers of Italian food, they’ll have to make due with New Haven apizza. Somehow I have a feeling the mayor will get the secret phone number for Sally’s.
That “Nope” above was in response to “Do you have to be a New Yorker to care?”
I’m not a New Yorker, but I think it’s interesting to hear about where kids are going. And Dante is well-known on the East Coast (and elsewhere-- I live in California).
Here’s Dante’s ad for his dad: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GgvXniTz7D8
Dante was a political asset to his father, in that New Yorkers concerned about stop and frisk of young black men knew that de Blasio’s own son was at risk for stop and frisk. For de Blasio it’s personal.
I lost money on that pool; I was sure he would select Brown.
True dat!
YES, hope we are suite mates!!! I’m posting this on the Yale board.
After growing up in NYC, it’s odd he didn’t want to venture off a bit farther from home.Especially with all of his choices.
Speaking from the point of view of a fellow NYer, I don’t find it that odd. Yale is far enough away that he doesn’t have to go home all semester, but it’s easy to get into the city for a day or a weekend if there’s something you want to do. And they have better food than Harvard.
^^II don’t find it odd at all. It is a fabulous place and choice!
So? Good for him, but there’s really no reason for this to be national news, or to be pinned on the front page, for that matter.
And there is no reason for it not to be. It is the same as when Emma Watson picked Brown, and even back before the instant media days, like when Brooke Shields picked Princeton and Jodie Foster went to Yale. I agree with your personal take on all of this as mostly nonsense, @hungryteenager, but it is also useless to ignore the fact that a large portion of the population, even the CC population, likes this kind of news. Although I suppose one could argue that if enough celebs and the kids of celebs (including high ranking politicians) choose a certain school or a small handful of them, that could be something that a prospective student would want to take into account as either a positive or negative factor, depending on what they valued. In the extreme, if the President’s daughters chose a very small LAC, that might influence whether I wanted to go there given all the protection and vetting that would be associated with that. At a larger school it would likely be far less noticeable.
I agree with hungry. I don’t even think most CC gives a hoot about this.
Good for him, but not pinworthy IMO.
Good for him even though he attended Btech, a HS many classmates and fellow SHS applicants regarded as the “last choice” back when we were applying in the early '90s.
Seriously, I believe Yale’s getting the better part of the deal in admitting him. Congrats to Dante!
Actually, the cut-off score changes depending on the lowest scoring student who fills the last of the seats allocated by the school for the incoming freshman class.
In that sense, I wouldn’t consider the test to have an absolute cut-off as the score changes each year depending on the distribution of scores…especially those of the lowest scoring student taking the very last available seat in each of the HS’ incoming freshman class. .
It’s worth mentioning that Brooklyn Tech, with 5500 students, takes many, many more students than any of the other test-in NYC schools (Stuyvesant is next with 3300) so it goes further down the list to fill its seats. My daughter and many of her classmates listed it as their first choice, including many for whom other schools would be an impossible commute.
I heard on the radio (WCBS in NYC) that Dante got in to all 10 schools where he applied. Anyone know the other 9 apart from Brown?
And many NYC parents are very proud to have their kids get into BTech, I just ran into a couple bragging about their kids’ acceptance.
