Son wants advice on applying for new part-time job

S2 has worked at a gym for over a year. He works at the counter checking people in, maybe signing them up, etc. He’s pretty bored with it and wants to move on. There is a restaurant opening (not a chain) and he wants to apply. He asked me what to say about why he is leaving his old job. He would just as well say he isn’t working, but I think that wont earn any points.

Can he say it is boring? Probably not a good word choice. He also works out there, is it ok to say that he feels like he is there all the time between work and working out and that he feels it’s time for a change? He earns a little over $8 hr, not sure if he will make more as a server since no idea how many hours he will get or how busy it will be. He could say he has been wanting to try serving because it will be more interesting that standing behind a desk.

The tricky part is to give a reason for leaving a job that won’t make the new employer wonder if you would then leave them for the same reason.

Hopefully someone out there has a small business and has sme ideas. Thanks.

I would say that there is “too much down time” - as long as the position he is interviewing for doesn’t have “too much down time”. He just needs to be honest - I don’t think there is anything wrong with saying he is a bit bored and ready to learn a new skill. I am assuming he is a college student?

I am a recruiter so I interview for a living. Honesty is always the best policy - he should NOT say that he is not currently working.

“I’m looking for a change.”

“I feel I’ve learned everything I can in this position.”

“There is too much down time.”

“I’m eager to learn new skills.”

“I’m eager to explore a different industry.”

“I’m looking for more responsibility.”

“I’m looking for a faster-paced environment.”

Ahsmuoh, I thought about that as well, but I think servers often have down time if it’s off peak hours. It might still be ok to say though because at least it shows that he wants to be busy.

I think he should say he is looking for an opportunity in a different business venue.

He should emphasize the positives in his current job that would be assets to the new one…most notably dealing with a variety of people.

I would NOT say he had “too much down time” as the future employer might wonder why your son didn’t seek additional things to fill that down time.

“I’m eager to explore a different industry.” (broaden my skills)

“I’m looking for more responsibility.” (I’m maturing)

These are really good suggestions.

Good suggestions. I think he figured out what to say.

The “job fair” was an old guy at a table with applications. Owner came out for a minute to shake hands. Sounds like maybe the building wasn’t ready to allow people in it so the table was outside. (still being renovated). Son said it was pointless, there was a stack of “2000” applications filled out. (doubt it, but it is less than a mile from a large community college and across from an apartment complex that probably has a lot of unemployed people).

If he gets an interview maybe he will want this advice after all. Thanks again!
