I was considering doing a song from the show “It’s Only Life” which was a revue similar to Songs for a New World. Now I know plenty of people have used songs from Songs for a New World despite the show not being “about something,” but is that true for everything? I’m just worried my audition will be looked down on because the song I chose is not from a legit “show”

A song from a revue is fine. The song itself is about something. It doesn’t matter if the show wasn’t a story show.

One of my D’s three songs she used for BFA auditions, was a song she had sung in a musical revue (a published musical revue) of songs by a well known composer, when she was nine years old actually. While that composer wrote many musicals, this particular song he wrote was for a movie, but it is in the musical revue of his work. She used this as her pre-1960 song and got into several schools where she used it.

I don’t know the revue you mean but I can think of many musical revues and where songs from them are used in auditions frequently.

I concure… a song from a revue is fine… In a revue each song is usually its own mini-play… the story is contained in the song. You just haveto make sure that you are clearly telling the story… trying to get something through the lyric of the song, and that there is a journey to your interpretation of the song.

I’m also doing a song from “It’s Only Life”. Can I use that song for all my schools since it’s from a revue? Because originally I was going to use that song for one school only and use another song for the rest of my school?

is it Takin’ the Wheel? I used it at an audition this weekend and even the program director hadn’t heard it, which everyone around me thought “impressive” (although I’ve never really understood why obscurity equals impressive). If so, apparently it was a good choice!

Did you use Takin the Wheel as your contemporary up-tempo and use a classic for your ballad. Because i’m doing the total opposite, i’m doing a classic up-tempo then i’m doing a song from It’s Only Life as my ballad.
