Songs about nature/wilderness?

<p>I have been assigned by my sister the task of creating a CD of songs about nature/wilderness. “Like John Denver.” This is related to a trip with extended family this summer to Alaska.</p>

<p>And next time anyone asks, I know nothing about itunes.</p>

<p>How fun for you!</p>

<p>Joni Mitchell’s Big Yellow Taxi</p>

<p>Put John Denver’s song “Rocky Mountain High” into Pandora and then listen to what else Pandora comes up with. Let some algorithm do the work for you…</p>

<p>the Into the Wild soundtrack (Eddie Vedder)
Nature’s way (Spirit, this is an old one)
Mercy mercy me, Marvin Gaye
Green eyed lady (ocean lady) Sugarloaf
Love, rain on me (reign over me?) The Who
River man, Nick Drake
(been through the desert on) A Horse with no name, America.
North to Alaska
Sweet Baby James, James Taylor
Kathy’s song (America) Simon and Garfunkel (more about a road trip than wilderness, I guess)
Watching the River Run, Loggins and Messina</p>

<p>–I’ll stop now before I thoroughly date myself.</p>

<p>ooh, one more ,equally dated: Snowbird, Anne Murray
and if you can find it, Shenandoah, sung by Connie Dover</p>

<p>Let’s Get Away From It All (Frank Sinatra)
Somewhere Over The Rainbow (Eva Cassidy)
When It’s Springtime in Alaska (Johnny Horton)
North To Alaska (Johnny Horton or Brian Gale)
Alaska (narrative by Garrison Keillor)
Alaska (Sarah Ayers Band)
On The Road Again (Willie Nelson)
Last Alaska Moon (New Monsoon)
Ole Buttermilk Sky (Willie Nelson)
Mountain Greenery (Ella Fitzgerald)
Lazy River (Bobby Darin)
Blue Skies (Ella Fitzgerald)
Alaska (Cactus)
The Mighty Quinn (Bob Dylan or Manfred Mann)
Alaska (Sky Sailing)
Alaska (Kate MacLeod)</p>

<p>

Perfect for a trip to Alaska!</p>

<p>Can’t wait to hear Ukelele songs
But yes I would highly recommend Into the Wild. ( & the movie)</p>

<p>[Also</a> Woody Guthrie](<a href=“http://www.woodyguthrie.org/projects/wgamericansong.htm]Also”>Woody Guthrie's American Song)</p>

<p>Some of these are a bit of a stretch…</p>

<p>On the Road Again (Willie Nelson)
Pastures of Plenty (Alison Kraus)
Blue Sky (The Allman Brothers)
New Morning (Bob Dylan)
Winterlude (Bob Dylan)
Bea’s Song (The Cowboy Junkies)
Green River (Creedance Clearwater Revival)
Have you ever seen the rain? (Creedance Clearwater Revival)
Travelling Again (Dar Williams)
Cool Clear Water (Sons of the Pioneers)
All the roots grow deeper (David Wilcox)
Waiting for the Sun (The Doors)
Beyond the Great Divide (Emmylou Harris)
Sugar Magnolia (The Grateful Dead)
Power and Glory (Phil Ochs) really a protest song
This Land is your Land (Woody Guthrie) ditto
April Come She Will (Simon and Garfunkel)
Fields of Gold (The Police)</p>

<p>How about “Out in the Country” by 3 Dog Night–a bit of an ecological theme with Earth Day in mind.</p>

<p>“The Eagle & the Hawk”—John Denver
“Take Me Home, Country Roads” – John Denver
“Going Up The Country” – Canned Heat</p>

<p>Big Country, by Big Country.</p>

<p>^
That is a great song too</p>

<p>If I could pick just one song from the Into the Wild album it would be this one- but why just pick one?</p>

<p>[Rise- on mandolin](<a href=“Rise - Eddie Vedder (Into the wild) Teo13 Sounds - YouTube”>Rise - Eddie Vedder (Into the wild) Teo13 Sounds - YouTube)</p>

<p>Wildfire? lol</p>

<p>“Roll on, Columbia, Roll On” by Woody Guthrie (Arlo’s dad) [Roll</a> On, Columbia, Roll On - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia](<a href=“http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roll_On,_Columbia,_Roll_On]Roll”>Roll On, Columbia, Roll On - Wikipedia)</p>

<p>Speaking of Woody Guthrie, look for Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings’ version of “This land is your land.”</p>

<p>What about “Today” by the New Christy Minstrels … (today while the blossoms still cling to the vine … ) it’s a campfire song from my girl scout years … and Five Hundred Miles (if you miss the train I’m on, you will know that I am gone. You can hear the whistle blow five hundred miles … or something like that)</p>

<p>You definitely will need “This land is your land…” Ah, we sang that song every day in third grade after Pledge of Allegiance. </p>

<p>I also like “Morning Has Broken”.</p>

<p>Shenandoah-not sure who wrote it but you can find a sweet version on Jerry Garcia and David Grisman’s Not For Kids Only</p>

<p>Has anyone mentioned America The Beautiful?</p>

<p>Gaia, James Taylor
Mother Natures Son, The Beatles (or John Denver)
The Lion Sleeps Tonight, The Tokens
Wind on the Water, Crosby Stills and Nash
Windsong, John Denver
Ode to Big Blue, Gordon Lightfoot
What a Wonderful World (by anyone who has done it)
Calypso, John Denver
Coal Tattoo, Kingston Trio
Doctor My Eyes, Jackson Browne
In the year 2525, somebody and Evans (I think)
Rain on the Scarecrow, John Mellencamp
The Three R’s, Jack Johnson</p>
