Why do people listen to songs that are sung in a language that they do not understand? Many of my friends have such songs on their gizmos and I was just wondering why.

So they can better understand the language or maybe they just like the way the song sounds. For example, I listen to many Japanese songs, when I start my process of becoming fluent, I will have a easier time understanding certain things.

Because they like the melody, regardless of what the lyrics say.

I like how German pop music sounds, but I speak German so I understand the music.

Well maybe they actually understand it…like me.

The most truthful answer? Fashionable e.g. this whole japanese pop craze.

^ It’s a Korean Pop craze.

Or because music transcends language and cultural barriers… :)

Or because music is the universal language.

^^^Yeah, sure it is :)

I love listening to foreign music, esp. Japanese and Korean Pop. SO GOOD!

^ haha you too? I love my J-Pop and K-Pop. :)

well I listen to songs in Hindi - i only understand a minimal amout of the hindi
(i.e. ten words) but the 30 hindi songs that i have are all from the couple of movies that I watched with subtitles that I liked when i was younger. Now I hate hindi movies.

Lolfail.

Anyway, when I listen to foreign music, I have no idea what’s going on, but the beat and rhythm have to be nice. It has to flow … which I why I can stand certain languages but not others.

I listen to French music, and I’ve never taken French, but I always look up translations of the lyrics so I know what the gist of the song is.

But understanding a song in the literal sense doesn’t necessarily provide a better listening experience. Sometimes it’s just better to bask in it. :)

When I was in French, I would look at the Top Songs in iTunes France. (I listen to mainstream music in the first place.) I looked up some of them, downloaded the ones I liked, looked up the lyrics, translated them myself, put the lyrics on my iPod, and read the lyrics while I listened to the song. It’s quite helpful, actually.
