My son received a call at home yesterday that his shared house had been ransacked and robbed over the Thanksgiving break. He is at a large southern university and lives on a cul-de-sac of new homes (all college kids). Most of the students were away on break but only his house was hit (not sure why…no cars in driveway? Thieves could see inside?). The thieves kicked in the back door and took a bunch of TV’s, an X-box, movies, games, an iPad and clothes (now well-dressed thieves). I’m usually pretty organized but I completely forgot to add renters insurance this year. Fortunately our Homeowner’s will cover most of it (minus a deductible of course). Please remind yourself and your students to take pictures, write down serial numbers and save receipts on electronics and other expensive items. Consider a renters policy, even if they are in dorms or an apartment complex says they are covered. It’s only about $70/year. My son is now learning about police reports, insurance claims, security measures and systems…life lessons I wish we could all live without. As I told him, “stuff” can be replaced but he has to remain vigilant about personal safety, even as this school that boasts of it’s safety.
