Soooo... am I hispanic?

I was born in Panama and lived there until I was 12.

However, I look white, I have a white name, and I’m pretty much white. The only thing that makes us hispanic is that we still speak in Spanish at home…

People keep telling me I might have a better chance getting in since I’m hispanic and stuff, but am I even considered hispanic if my last name is not Gomez or Gonzales?
Not trying to sound racist or anything at all. But when I looked at lists of people who have won hispanic scholarships, every single one of them had hispanic first and last names.

Soo… on paper, will I look like a wannabe hispanic?
I realize how stupid this sounds, but I’ve never really been considered hispanic anywhere I went so I don’t see why I would now.

A lot of “Hispanics” from Carribean islands look absolutely black and don’t have last names like Gonzales or Gomez. Because of their place of birth and language they speak they identify themselves as Hispanics.

What is really important for you to do now, BEFORE you identify yourself as Hispanic for colleges or scholarships, is to identify yourself as Hispanic for your high school. High schools usually send race/ethnicity papers to sign in the beginning of the school year with the rest of required forms. High schools include information about race/ethnicity in official transcript  so each and every college/scholarship will be able to compare information on your application and school forms.

P.S. It is almost amusing that applicants don’t have to self-identify themselves, it is OPTIONAL. All these Asians with last name Lee asking here at collegeconfidential what will happen if they don’t mention Chinese origin, would admission officers think it is a white last name…
High school transcripts, at least here in Texas, have it all already reported.:D

Wow I had no idea. Good stuff. Thanks!
