Could someone please explain the benefits of having sophomore standing at UC Berkeley? What are the disadvantages to a student who is entering Cal with 25 points for example?

You’ll have slightly earlier assigned dates for future Telebears which is when you get to select & enroll your classes.
Otherwise, it’s not really an advantage/disadvantage.
Note that there is a distinction between class standing (by units) and class level (by number of semesters since starting as a frosh or junior transfer) when it comes to eligibility for or reserved spaces in certain classes, according to http://writing.berkeley.edu/courses/Cole/cw151/FAQ.html .
