I’m going to be a freshman at USC this year and I’m considering joining a sorority. My only concerns are the costs and the time commitment, especially for pledging. I’m going to major in biochemistry so my course work is gonna be pretty difficult and I want to make sure I maintain a good GPA. For USC, what is the average time commitment of pledging and yearly costs? What activities will I be expected to do? Will I have time for any other extra-curriculars/clubs?
I’m in a fraternity, which of course has a less cost and commitment than most sororities. But I do have several friends involved in sororities as well and they generally have time to pursue other extracurriculars. Costs are, I believe, listed on the Fraternity and Sorority Life website. As is a semester report of every sorority and fraternity’s GPA, charity money raised, and involvement in other clubs. Just taking a quick glace most of the sororities have average GPAs above both the total USC and total Greek Life GPAs. Once chapter in particular has a 3.51 average, a 3.49 average for new members, and every single one of their 333 sisters is involved in another organization on campus.
In short, yeah you’ll be fine and I think you should at least rush.
Im in a sorority and going through new member education is normal once a week meetings at the house for maybe an hour. Depending on the sorority the first semester is around $850 and after that is like $500 and then the greek meal plan, but all the prices are on the USC fraternity and sorority life page. Sorority will work with you if you have class or something during an event or meeting. For extra curricular/clubs everyone has to be apart of an organization outside of the sorority. You sorority will also have tutor and other things to help you study and keep up a good GPA.
