Sororities

if youre not in a sorority are the parties still open to all?
and how much does it cost to be in one?
best sorority? :)

thanks!

Greek life isn’t for everyone. My personality is generally the exact opposite of what fits into a sorority as I am generally much more comfortable around men than other women.

Sororities are expensive. I don’t know the exact price but I am fairly certain that some cost more than others. There is an old rumor that one of the fraternities checks bank accounts to make sure the pledges were wealthy enough (probably just a baseless rumor, but says a lot about the culture).

Some parties are open to just about anyone, some require your name to be on a list, and some require you to be a member of a certain sorority or fraternity, if I’m not mistaken. Honestly I didn’t frequent them so I’m not sure, this is just what I’ve heard.

The most down-to-earth and friendly sorority girls I knew where in Gamma Phi Beta so that is the one I would recommend. If you are Christian, there is a Christian sorority called HIS (He Is Sufficient) which I would also recommend.

For guys, the nicest fraternity guys I knew were in SigEp or the Christian fraternity, BYX (Brothers Under Christ).

I have heard from many of my friends who attend SMU that they love Greek life there- though the process can be a bit intense/competitive

for information about costs visit the SMU Panhellic information websites:

actually, just click around that one and it gives you everthing you need to know! If you want a perspective of someone who is actually in one, you can wait till you get there (or go to any information meetings) and meet the girls and get to know them. Since rush is deferred, it gives you a chance to really get to know the sororities before joining one!
