Sorry if this seems stupid but could someone explain to me the set up of classes?

I looked online at my schedule (im going to be a freshman this year). What’s the difference between these two course listings? :

SCNC C1000 sec 001
FRONTIERS OF SCIENCE

SCNC C1100 sec 026
FRONTIERS OF SCIENCE-DISC

I know that the second one means discussion so lecture? then what’s the first one? And how does the idea of “sections” work? Sorry, I’m really confused. I figured I’d ask here before calling the school.

If you go to the Directory of Courses - [CU Directory of Classes](http://www.columbia.edu/cu/bulletin/uwb/) , you can also get useful information about your courses. The first Frontiers of science course, section 001, has 547 students in it; it’s a lecture time assignment. The second, section 026, has 19 students in it at the moment; that’s where you’ll have a chance to discuss things such as the lecture.

At the beginning of every week, you have a course-wide lecture that all the students taking FoS are supposed to attend. Later in the week, you attend a seminar/discussion section where an instructor (sometimes a grad student, sometimes a professor) will go over the material from the lecture and answer people’s questions. When I took FoS three years ago, we had weekly problem sets. These were the same for each FoS section, but grading depends on the individual instructor.

theres Frontiers lecture, which is the first listing.
and then theres Frontiers discussion, which is the second listing. you need to be signed up for both, as you are.
basically lecture is held in an auditorium with all the students and this is where you are lectured to. the students are then divided into discussion sections of 15-20 people, and this is where you are given your homework and you go over the lecture, but in a more personal setting.

thank you all very much

Does Frontiers of Science Discussion section also get automatically preregistered like the lecture section?
For those who may not be aware of the discussion section, does the registration process prompt for the mandatory registration of the discussion section also?

Yes. And yes? I don’t know if I understand your question. Everyone who has frontiers gets assigned the lecture (of which there is one) and a discussion section that meets sometime else during the week.
