"Sorry, we don't take credit cards..."

Is it just me, or has there been a significant rise in convenience stores not accepting credit cards over the past few years?

The last time I used a credit card was about two years ago, and EVERYONE accepted them then – I used to buy slurpees at the 7-11 and Pez at Mac’s Milk with my Visa. Today, however, I received my brand new Master Card and tried to use it to buy cigarettes at a local smoke shop. “Sorry, we don’t use credit.” I tried THREE more convenience stores in the area, and every one of them said the same thing. Two years ago, each one of these stores used credit. I asked one of the clerks why they no longer accepted it, and he shrugged his shoulders, saying “We just don’t.”

What the hell is going on? Has anyone else noticed this?

first, you’re using credit cards to buy small purchases? I’ve always heard that isn’t a good idea.

But I agree with you that I’ve noticed smaller stores stop accepting them, maybe not to the extent you are, but there was a store down the road from my house that use to take them, now doesn’t. O well.

Fairly common around here… I really hate using plastic for anything less than €10 though.

I use plastic for everything… not a big fan of cash anymore.

I haven’t seen any dips in stores accepting plastic. Could be a regional thing (I’m from Atlanta, where EVERYONE buys crap all the time and uses plastic, but IDK about Toronto).

And, you smoke Fides?

I use plastic because my parents take care of most of the bill. On that note, I haven’t had a good cigar for a while. Can’t wait till I get back home :D

“And, you smoke Fides?”

Horrible habit, I know.

Stores like convenience places probably don’t want to take credit because the comapnies like Visa and Mastercard, etc, are charging more for the stores to use their services. It’s not worth it for them for small dollar amounts…

I like to use my credit card for everything as I get cash back, and it’s easier to pay a bill once a month. Also working on building/establishing my credit.
