South-Asian (first-gen Bengali) considered URM for law school?

I know that Asian applicants are often ORM for undergrad admission - - but any boost for law school applicant who is first-gen (to complete college, not law school) and Bengal? The young man in question also has hon discharge from the Air Force. He wants to attend law sch on the east-coast (pref NYC); 3.4gpa (while working f/t), 164 LSAT.

Thanks in advance.

bump, bump, bump . . . .

I’ll bite. The college gpa sounds low for being competitive, regardless of ethnicity. If working full time he should have taken fewer classes at a time in order to do better. He should not expect any special consideration.

He certainly will not be considered a URM as a South Asian. I don’t know whether a first-gen preference carries over to law school or not.

Law school admissions are highly formulaic and the many predictors/models on the internet will give this student a good idea of where he is likely to get admitted based on his LSAT and gpa. On the margins, the other factors will come into play-- LOR’s, Air Force, essays, etc. His ethnicity is not likely to be a factor at an urban East coast law school, potentially more of a factor in parts of the country where he would in fact be a minority (i.e. very few applicants of his ethnicity). First generation status could be relevant, but it is a very minor tip factor all things being equal.

Unlike undergrad, there are not a lot of mysterious admits to law schools, and it is not that hard to see where he will and won’t be admitted. Hope this helps.

How long has the young man been out of college? That will affect the impact of his grades (not that they are terrible, folks…). Being a veteran may also be a help.

DH worked FT almost five years before going back to law school. Was told by the T-7 that accepted him that this was VERY significant in his admission and that it absolved him of some of his GPA sins. DH had a 3.2 UG (Ivy) and a perfect LSAT. Suffice it to say that DH was highly motivated to do well in law school – he was giving up a very successful career to do it, not to mention I was supporting him during that time!

South Asian is not a URM for admissions purposes. Air Force service should help a little. Be careful not to rack up a lot of law school debt. This is not the greatest job market for new lawyers.
