South Carolina or UGA Honors College - Which is Better and Why?

University of South Carolina does an outstanding job marketing their Honors College and when we visited the school, we loved everything about it…but
University of Georgia just admitted our child to their Honors College so trying to compare and understand which is ultimately better.
We are OOS and really trying to understand if USC lives up to the hype or if UGA HC is better from an outcome perspective. TIA!

I saw it, but it doesn’t address how it compares to UGA HC

I surmise there is no answer to this.

Perhaps your student can ask to speak with a student ambassador at both - and get more info - of the exact offerings, etc.

The other thing to remember is - there are likely “many” schools where students can have a wonderful experience - not just the one everyone is trying to narrow down into.

While these are both SEC publics, the campuses themselves are very different as is the surrounding area (U of SC much smaller and more urban) and UGA has the best placed college football stadium in America - and perhaps things outside of Honors might also impact the decision?

Can you go to the Registrar’s page and compare current and past honors class offerings? Reading through many honors classes offered at SCHC definitely excited me and my son.

Some of it may be particular to major, such as direct entry benefits or special internship/mentoring/study abroad opportunity. And if your child wants to work in Atlanta after graduation, maybe that gives UGA an edge.

But I completely agree with @tsbna44 that a lot will depend on your child’s impression of the larger university. My son really liked the USC campus (preferred to UGA) and he is interested in politics to location is a Capitol is nice. I know the UGA Honors dorm is really nice, but the location did not seem to be in the best part of campus for my son’s major, whereas the SCHC Honors Dorm is right by the business school . . . so that’s nice. He also really, really hates the Bulldogs, but thinks he can get on board with Gamecocks. Ultimately, I think they are both fantastic options that will lead to great outcomes.

Congratulations to your child on two fantastic options!

We looked at both. My DD ended up at UGA, because she got the top scholarship there. The UGA honors college is, stats-wise, an academically stronger group of students than SC. Outcomes-wise, UGA wins hands down. Experience-wise, they are likely similar.

this is going to be a personal decision. my daughter is at UGA Honors and loves it but she did not look at USC. I think the things that put UGA on her radar were a larger and growing Jewish presence, and the stronger stats of the school in general if you take away the honors college, which translates into a stronger reputation OOS. she also just really liked the people she met there.
it’s not Harvard, but people outside of Georgia still sometimes respond with, “Georgia? that’s a good school!”

your kid should prob go where they think they will be happier.
