I watched SP on PBS Live from Lincoln Center last night and thought it was a wonderful show. The only problem I had was with the guy who played Lt. Cable. He sang beautifully but I didn’t care for his interpretation of the character. He did not make me LIKE Lt. Cable, and when he died, I was like “oh well.” The only other SP I’ve seen was a community theatre production which was well done, but I remember liking the character and being sad when he died. My question is for those who saw the show with Matthew Morrison in the role. Did he play it “warmer and fuzzier?”

I saw the Broadway production live a little while back, and many people said the same thing. After the show, even the lighting director was saying how he didn’t like Lt. Cable. I thought that his singing was great though.

I don’t remember having a single complaint about this production when I saw it!

I saw the same production last night on PBS here is TX. I just think the guy playing Lt. Cable wasn’t a great actor. He played the part as very arrogant and not particularly sympathetic. Great singer though! Loved the sets and costuming!!

I don’t remember Matthew Morrison playing Cable as arrogant and smart-assy as the new guy does, but I do recall feeling at the time that the character was cockier and less romantic than what I was used to from the movie version. So I think it’s part directorial choice and part poor acting. Joe Cable’s death always reduced me to tears whenever I saw the movie. Not so in the current Broadway production.

I couldn’t help but compare the PBS broadcast from Lincoln Center to the PBS broadcast in concert from Carnegie Hall with Reba McEntire and Brian Stokes Mitchell. I will be circumspect in my comments and simply offer that I found the Carnegie Hall production to be far more musically engaging.

I have to disagree with the comments here. I loved the guy who played Cable. He was supposed to be from a snobbish Philadelphia family. I thought that strong acting choice made his ultimate questioning of the values with which he was raised more effective than some cotton candy portrayal. In any event, he’s MUCH better looking than Matthew Morrison!!!

LOL–to each his own! I did not think he was better looking than Morrison. Would have loved to hear Reba sing it, though I thought Kelli O’Hara was great.

I did watch to whole one with Reba, probably because I was fascinated with her doing that role, I also thought the whole cast was really good, I love Brian Stokes Mitchell and Alec Baldwin was surprisingly wonderful. I have to admit that I haven’t watched the whole production from Lincoln center, I have caught bits and pieces of it and I thought Kelli O’Hara and Paul Shotz (sp?) were really good, I was surprised at what a good actress Kelli is.
