i am from new jersey and really want to look at school in southern cal. i am plannignn on majoring in music. could anyone share their experiences at the following colleeges?

Chapman University
Loyola Marymount University

Post this in the music majors forum Music Major - College Confidential and do a search there as well. What kind of music? Performance? What instrument?

the music school at USC is pretty good too

music composition or contemporary music studies

USC is one of the few good music schools that have a contemporary music studies program.
As mentioned before, it has been discussed extensively in the Music Majors Forum. USC, UCLA, and San Francisco conservatory have reputable composition programs.

How did you come up with your list? Never heard of anyone going to Pepperdine for music. Is it the setting which attracts you, or the conservative religious atmosphere? Chapman has a serious school of music - don't know anything about composition there, but I know a very serious violinist who is very happy there. As mentioned above, for Southern California for composition - USC makes the most sense for out of state students. In state: UCLA, UCSD, UCSB all offer composition (different aesthetics.) LMU is more known for film than music - but might be a way in to the film biz, as well as Chapman and USC, if that's what you're after.

If you're really looking for contemporary (meaning popular?) - then USC for sure.

The Thornton School of Music just celebrated 125 years in Los Angeles. The school has had notable faculty which included Jascha Heifetz, Gregor Piatigorsky, William Primrose and Ingolf Dahl.

Majors include performance in strings, winds and percussion, harp, keyboard studies, music industry, jazz studies and popular music among others.

The composition faculty is distinguished. You may have heard compositions by the following:
