Can you give me a list of colleges that still have “Southern Charm” By southern charm, I mean
-beautiful Campus
-preppy
-Student body is mostly from southern states
-conservative (old fashioned values)
-friendly people
So far the only colleges I have found that match this are Sewanee and Wofford
Thanks!
We were visiting colleges over spring break last week and Wake Forest would seem to fit the bill. Can’t say whether the student body was conservative or not (my sense was that there was a healthy mix). But it definitely had the other criteria you mentioned. Very beautiful campus and very friendly people.
My alma mater Auburn fits that description as do many of the SEC schools in the Deep South.
Washington and Lee fits that description in almost every way(politically conservative, preppy, GORGEOUS campus in tiny Lexington VA(7,000 people) it even has Robert E Lee buried under the chapel) Admissions is pretty selective thanks to it’s top 20 LAC ranking, and 80% of the student body is Greek. A great Southern school, as long as you are looking for a Greek dominated atmosphere in a deeply rooted Southern Liberal Arts College with a student population under 2000. Other elite Southern schools include Vandy(to some extent), Wake, UNC Chapel Hill, Davidson, and from a not as academically elite standpoint, any state schools are good. Some, Alabama for example, will give ample scholarships (full tuition for a 30 ACT), Ole Miss and Florida are party schools, UGA and Florida have stellar academics, Auburn and MSU have stellar engineering programs, Texas A&M is more military style, LSU is a breed of it’s own, but essentially anything in the SEC is quite southern, except maybe A&M and Mizzou as I am not as familiar with them, but whatever you are looking for you can find in any of the state schools if the Deep South.
Furman University, Greenville SC
University of Richmond
W&L
Sewanee
UVA(ish)
Vanderbilt
Berry College
Centre College
Rhodes College
Birmingham Southern
Ole Miss, hands down.
Roanoke, Elon
I think the only SEC school I’d call a preppy school is Vandy. The others are too large for that label and are more all over the map so to speak
By all over the map I mean a wider student body generally (bigger state schools like auburn etc have a wider breadth of specialties and draws). Not in terms of geography or anything like that
@AVR455
Do you know anything about Hampden-Sydney? If so, tell me everything you know.
I know a young man at Hampton-Sydney now and I also know a few graduates. The school is small, all male, rural. The guys I know are preppy, bow tie wearing types. Generally outgoing and politically active. I’d say in general it’s a conservative school. The young man there now comes from a conservative family with a military background. He is preppy, has somewhat long hair, loves surfing, is very athletic and is involved on the rugby team.
Florida Southern.

Here’s what I’m looking for in a college
-SMALL(Preferably no more than 2,000 students. MAX 3,000)
Environment( I want a college with the environment of a private Country Club. Wealthy, posh student body)
–Preppy(I want a school where the overwhelming majority of students have popped collars)
-Strong academic community (I want a school where the students care about their schoolwork)
-Small classes (I MUST have small classes. No more than 15 students in a class)
-Strong Political Science program (I want a strong American Government program)
-Conservative(I would prefer that the student body lean conservative, but anything is fine, as long as it’s not ultra-Liberal)
In terms of my stats, I am a B student, and will probably get around 1900-1950 on the SAT
Thanks!. I go to an all-male Catholic school.

?? No more than 3000 students? You’ll be hard pressed to find such a school that isn’t heavily leaning female (few boys).
Birmingham Southern (but still heavy girls)
Samford (but still heavy girls)
I don’t think you’re going to find what you want with such a small school.
Do you want a school that is about 50/50 male/female?
BTW…have you asked your parents how much they’ll pay?
kdkhan-
I haven’t spent any time at H-SC but I can tell you the little that I know from folks i know who’ve attended the college and the general reputation I’ve gleaned from folks I know:
- it is probably one of the more conservative schools in today's environment, very traditional in a way that you won't find often. There is a reason this school has chosen to remain all male and not become co-ed, which is that it is considered an integral part of their tradition. Not my cup of tea, but to each his own.
- the academics are reputed to be quite good and the school is known to be hard on its students. There is a perception of H-SC as a party school and it (for whatever reason) has a lower academic profile than the schools that I mentioned like W&L. Despite that, the school is known to have high expectations of its students in the classroom and is willing to (and does) give lower grades to students who deserve them. From my understanding there is not a lot of grade inflation (a good thing I'd say). A guy I knew whose son graduated from Hamden Sydney told me that his son wasn't the best in HS but that the school pushed him once he enrolled and made him into a strong student.
- The school has a lot of very loyal alums in Virginia, especially in Richmond. That said, it doesn't have a lot of name recognition outside of the state which may or may not matter to you.
It might be a good fit for you but I think it’s one of those places you’ll want to talk to alums about since it’s quite small and a lot of us only have anecdotal knowledge of it. One thing you might consider is price- the school seems to be very generous with merit aid and gives students scholarships above a certain SAT. More general advice though- don’t pick a school based on general reputation or someone else’s perception. Every college tries to shape its image in the most positive way either and often that’s not a service but a detriment. Going to college isn’t about perception, it’s about YOU, your education, and where you want to go in life.
OP – You keep posting this same question on this and other forums. Perhaps you should start taking actual trips to these campuses identified by the various posters. By doing so, you might be able to answer your question based on first-hand experience, as you seem to be unsatisfied with all the answers you have gotten on the numerous threads you have started asking this same basic question.
