Southwest Baggage-Box vs. Suitcase

Okay so DS moved from Boston back “home” to CA in September when he graduated from school. Job here did not work out. After we paid to move everything to CA (the last thing we agreed to pay for) he is now headed back to Boston. He won’t have his furniture, TV, etc as I will not pay to move it back. Eventually we will ship some things UPS on his dime. For now he is going to a friend’s apartment until he finds his own place. It looks like he does have a job to go back to.
Question: Southwest says two free pieces of luggage up to 50 lbs. each and 62 total inches max. I assume one can be a well packed cardboard box? Anybody know for sure on this one. I’m thinking a box might be more useful than a suitcase…

You can check boxes. I’ve done it (computers). They will ask about the contents and you might have to sign a liability waiver.

I have checked boxes - when DD went to school we sent her keyboard boxed as a checked bag. Just make sure it meets the dimension requirements and they can carry it :)

We’ve checked foot lockers and Rubbermaid bins and just last night I saw a couple of boxes on the baggage carousel.

Just be sure to weigh the box! If it comes close to the maximum dimensions, it’s really easy to load it up to a point that far exceeds the max weight.
