I was looking forward to saving big time with this program, but when I called about it today, I was told that no new signups would be accepted after July 15. So if your kid is 18 you have a few days to get in before it ends. Apparently, current members are fine.

What is the difference between “college rapid rewards” and the regular “rapid rewards”?

Apparently you could earn a free round trip twice as fast as regular rapid rewards, and you got a 4 point bonus just for signing up. But alas, I never had the chance to experience the difference.

How do we enroll in the program? I already have a Rapid Rewards account, but I don’t seem to be under the “college” rewards program, though I’m in the age range. How do I switch into it?

The double credits will end in October, unfortunately. Here’s the letter they sent to my son:

I have not been able to find any way to convert an existing Rapid Rewards membership to college rewards. I’m emailing SW to see if there is anything that can be done (our son became a member in high school).

Marilyn, it is possible to convert an existing account to a college account, but it will be interesting to see if they get it done before the deadline.

I switched my oldest daughter’s account over a couple of years ago and I sent in all the proof of age and enrollment status they asked for, but it still took multiple phone calls to get it taken care of.

Daughter #2 will be a freshman in the fall, but I won’t have proof of enrollment by the deadline, so I guess she’ll miss out on the college program. Too bad, it was a great deal!

Since Southwest is no longer the cheapest airline out there I just find the lowest price that fits in the schedule and make sure we’re enrolled in the frequent flyer program. It all adds up, esp. since the Delta/NWA merger.

Marilyn, please let us know if SW answers your question. We are in the same boat (plane?) here. Thnks!

To those of you attempting to change your account, it is probably not worth the time and trouble unless you have a lot of trips scheduled between now and October 15 since program will end at that time (as quoted by Patsmom in the above message). We did convert an existing account a couple of years ago, and it took a couple of phone calls and faxing in my daughter’s college schedule, as I recall. It is too bad the program is ending since Southwestern has only started flying into my daughter’s home airport of LGA and the double credits would have been nice.

Thanks msjhop - DS is not flying anywhere between now and October (or at most one round trip). Just wish I’d know about this earlier but he didn’t have too many trips anyway. But I did just discover they missed one credit so glad I checked his account! Not to mention they missed the same credit on my account.

Still curious what Southwest will say even though it sounds like nothing can be done.
