Just heard that Southwest will start servicing Milwaukee this fall! This is great news for those in the north Chicago suburbs who would like to avoid the trip through the city during traffic times.

Fabulous! My family-in-law is in Milwaukee, so that’s tremendously convenient for my husband and me.

Depends where they fly. New cities have tended to fly only to a couple of Southwest’s hubs at first (and they do have hubs despite popular belief) - Chicago-Midway, Nashville, Baltimore, Las Vegas, Phoenix.

Since they are not adding to their fleet, just taking away flights from elsewhere in the system, I doubt you will see more than 2 cities in the first year - 2 of these 3 choices is my bet:

Las Vegas
Baltimore
some city in Florida

Won’t help for this summer’s visit to UWisc-Madison and Marquette. But if S2 likes either, it should help with the transportation component.

I’m crossing my fingers for Vegas.

(My husband’s job is in southwestern Utah, a couple of hours from Las Vegas, and if I want to live with him, he’s either going to have to transfer to Houston or I’m going to have to transfer to southwestern Utah or Vegas. He’s a music composition professor and I’m a civil engineer, so while the economy stinks right now, it’s far more likely that I’ll get a job there than he’ll get a job here. McCarran would be our nearest major airport.)

Airtran is already probably keeping rates low with their flights to LV. Frankly, I would think SW is less likely to do LV given Airtran and Midwest already fly it.

When, oh when, will SWA come to Atlanta??!!

When Delta says it’s OK.

This is great news! For my family, as well as all those attending UW Madison, as Milwaukee Mitchell is far easier to access than Midway.

In the Chicago Tribune, it said Southwest in Milwaukee will start flying to LaGuardia and Logan during the summer.

MKE is about 1.5 hours from Madison. It can be longer on a snowy day. The best thing would for it to come directly into MSN. Alas though that will not happen.

Delta is never going to sell off those gates, so you can forget about it.
SW already flies to Vegas. One of our best friends has been a pilot for SWA since 01. His typical route has him flying to Vegas, San Diego, Philly, Baltimore, La Guardia and Raleigh.

The problem with airtran right now is they are teetering on being insolvent. Our friend retired from the AF last June and went to Air Tran, by September he was furloughed. Air Tran does have a good hold on the DC area.

If you haven’t booked tickets yet, you might want to check out Jet blue by midnight tonight. They are havin a great summer sale http://sev.prnewswire.com/airlines-aviation/20090518/NY1800218052009-1.html

I don’t read it that way - I read it as they start service in Milwaukee after they start service in New York and Boston.

“Southwest said it will enter Milwaukee after it begins flights to New York’s LaGuardia Airport on June 28 and Boston’s Logan Airport on Aug. 16.”
