Spark at Brown for Middle School Summer Program

My son got into the SPARK for middle school summer program at Brown. I am curious is anyone can give me information on how the students are supervised. This will be his first time away from home and I have concerns about the safety of a 13 year old on a college campus. Can any former SPARK at Brown students give me some feedback on this? Thanks.

I wouldn’t worry about safety unless your son is the type to be willfully bad. Someone will walk the students from place to place and there will be an adult living on the same dorm floor. I live in the Providence area and the College Hill area is safe. Petty theft is always a possibility. You should certainly remind him to stay with his group, follow instructions, etc.

My daughter went with friends to Thayer Street (the shopping street at Brown) since middle school.

Thank you BelleofAmherst! That makes me feel much better. My son is not willfully bad. He knows to stay with the group. They have some night time activities. They are chaperoned by undergraduate RA’s, the same ones that live in the dorm with them. I still worry a little bit about them walking back from night activities on campus. Hopefully they will always be in a large enough group to ward off any pick pocketer.
