Let’s see, she is deaf, got lessons from an equally deaf street musician, just shows up to a major competition with a duct taped violin and she triumphs.

Lesson: 22 years of music education is not what it’s cracked up to be.I gotta get my musician D some of that shampoo.

Cute story, although it’s not possible to tape a violin back together.

And it always bugs me in things like this that they can’t be bothered to find someone who actually knows how to play a violin. It wrecks it for me when the faking is so painfully bad.

I am probably making a mistake in thinking that people post such things for discussions sake…but here goes:
The entire premise wrecks it for me. Almost everything in tv commercials is a poor and irritating caricature at best, manipulative, annoying and often a down right mockery of real life. . While that commercial trivializes the process of becoming a musician, it even more trivializes process of overcoming a handicap. It even trivializes dealing with the effects of children’s cruelty to each other. I would add “offensive” to “annoying”.This makes Groupons attack on trombone players read like Tolstoy. It was all I could do not to run out into traffic and end it all. I want those two minutes of my life back.

Was tempted to post on the music majors forum, but as they say in Young Frankenstein: " An angry mob is a dangerous thing!"

Well Parent, I enjoyed see it very much! Thanks for posting.

Cool commercial.

But the point of a commercial is to associate it with the product, no? I will not remember tomorrow that that’s a Pantene commercial.

lol, musicamusica, post away - this has been seen by professional musicians who appreciated it for what it is. They saw a version that doesn’t give away the name of the commercial until the end.

Is this a TV commercial? It’s four minutes long. It’s rare to see a TV commercial go over 30 seconds these days.

I thought you were going to post the peanut butter Snickers one. lol, it’s awesome.

But wow, it’s never seen a commercial like that before. It’s so cool.

As a dancemom, I have the same reaction when I see non-dancers pretending to be dancers in commercials. I remember seeing Taylor Swift do a “grand jete” in a shampoo commercial which the ad’s producers apparently thought was good enough to include; ugh.

OTOH, these guys’ technique isn’t bad for beginners:

Sorry, I have to agree with others, I am sure they could have found someone with nice hair that actually can play a violin correctly, even if they dub the sound, they would be able to use the bow properly, move their fingers they way they should, vibrato when the music calls for it, etc. Even just giving that girl a few lessons would have helped—and no way would her violin sound that good taped together like that. It’s the vibration of the wood that gives the violin it’s sound. Spend a couple extra dollars and get it right.

coureur, it sure seems like those birth control and other medical commercials go on forever, doesn’t it? This is a Taiwanese ad from 2008, and I don’t know how their program works. I think Pantene is made by Proctor and Gamble.

Since I had a kid in high school who was a nationally ranked violinist, and another one who was better than most, I am certainly enjoying the “know it all comments”, and am bumping this up to hear more!!!

I sense a bit of China envy. Didn’t the NYT do a piece on that recently? :)

Fwiw, made in Thailand, in Thai, originally to attract Thai consumers.

I’ve never heard of national rankings for high school (or any age) violinists. Where can I find that?
