At what point in the recruiting process can you ask to speak to players? Is this something for OVs only? I understand talking with recruits would be time consuming for the players, but boy would it be helpful for the kids who are trying to form opinions about several schools.

During an unofficial you can tour facilities, meet coaches and maybe get a quick introduction to a player or 2. But you probably won’t get much insight into the team dynamic until you take the OV. I know women’s soccer runs on a really early recruiting timetable so it would be nice to get that info earlier in the process. Maybe someone in your existing network of players, parents and coaches could connect you with players at some of the schools you’re considering to get some candid opinions of the programs.

I would ask that of the head coach at your prospective colleges BEFORE contacting any of the athletes. Her/his response to your request will be telling in itself - though OVs impact the athletes enough and the coach may simply want to shield the athletes from multiple requests from prospective athletes. Wouldn’t recommend circumventing the coach as this may circle back against you.

See if your kid can schedule an overnight UV where he/she will stay in the dorm with current players.

My son stayed overnight with players, and now as a player, has had recruits stay overnight with him. It is probably the best way to get a feel for the team.

My son went to an on-campus camp, and although he didn’t get 1 on 1 time talking to players, several he knew from watching games were at the camp and he could see how they interacted with the head coach and other coaches. He was very happy to get that opportunity.

It also helped to watch a game with them, so he could see the coach’s philosophy on subbing and playing underclassmen.
