Special Circumstances?

Sorry for posting so soon, I was going to ask this on the thread I posted yesterday but it’s gotten pretty long so I’ll make another post.

Special Circumstances
If you have experienced any special circumstances that may have affected your academic progress or opportunities to engage or excel in activities, please provide details to enable appropriate consideration.

For this part of GT app., can I put how it was tough for me to study, communicate, and be involved with school activities since I didn’t speak/understand any English? (I’m Asian)
I was thinking about putting this but this was like in elementary, so would it really matter?

Also I don’t have a lot of ECs because nothing in my school really interested me. I literally joined every clubs my school offered on the first day of my freshmen year (well, maybe not on the first day) to see if I could find any interesting club (even joined some gay club…no offense) Will this be some kind of circumstance? or should I just not put anything there?

Thanks,

oh, and I didn’t find any club that interested me. I stayed in two or three clubs cause they invited me.

I wouldn’t discuss the fact that there were no clubs that interested you. Unless you attend an incredibly small school, there should have been something of interest. And if there wasn’t, you could have started a new club or could have sought out external clubs, organizations, or events. Saying that you didn’t participate because nothing offered to you was interesting makes you sound like a person without any ambition.

As far as not speaking English, I think that certainly qualifies as a special circumstance. The issue, though, is that Tech is looking for circumstances that affected your high school career (after all, they’re not looking at middle school or elementary school transcripts). So if your lack of English did not affect your high school grades, it’s not relevant.

Thanks BanjoHitter,
I think I’ll just leave that part blank…

p.s. I did start my own club last year…! (physics) but all other clubs were just boring :(

You can play up the fact that you searched for an interested, couldn’t find, and took the initiative to start something on your own. That’s a good quality.
