<p>The Core: Columbia has something similar. It’s pretty intensive and broad, and provides a common academic ground for all students. A lot of people complain about it, because it is quite a bit of work, but it really does help the whole “life of mind” thing that is so often talked about. </p>
<p>Community: We’re pretty tight-nit. It’s an interesting group. Everyone here is very smart, obviously, but they’re also all here because they truly love learning. You don’t come to UChicago if you don’t – it wouldn’t be worth the work, nor would you be able to maintain your sanity while having to do so much work if you didn’t enjoy it. Everyone here is going through the same intense studies, and that by itself helps make bonds.
Also, all of the resident halls are broken into houses ranging from 40-130 residents (about). They houses all have their own lounges, tables at the dining halls, resident heads (mommy and daddy), and play IM sports together – the people in the house will be your closest friends, at least for the first year or so. It’s like Harry Potter, basically… </p>
<p>Future: We’ll see! I’m not there yet… I know that most graduates either go on to grad school or have little trouble getting a job. There is a really good career advising program here.</p>
<p>I think the best thing about UChicago is that everyone has some kind of spark - whether they’re an economics major who’s fascinated with Albanian human rights, or a biology major with a fashion internship. The students here are contradictory - I think that’s the word. They’ll surprise you. </p>
<p>I also love Scav, the annual scavenger hunt (largest in the world) that sends students across the city, and the country, looking for weird and wacky items. </p>
