Specialized College (MCPHS) and Other Interests (Music)

Hey! So I am planning on beginning my application to MCPHS (a direct program) in a few months for the Fall 2021 cycle and just had a quick question. I do want to go on to medical school and that is my goal (since MCPHS has a direct medical program). However, music is a HUGE part of who I am and so do not want to give that up. Are there any music certificates/part - time programs in the Boston area or online where I can maybe pursue music (maybe a diploma/certificate/part time degree/etc)? I know I can always join community ensembles to play, but I really want to go beyond that.

Any way to ask colleges in their area if I can be a visiting student and take classes for a music certificate/diploma?

Any help and ideas appreciated!

Do you mean the combined BS/MD program with St. George’s University, a Caribbean medical school? Or the combined program with LECOM?

@TomSrOfBoston I meant the combined program with LECOM

You should take your music questions to the music majors forum. The people there will know about any dual-degree options and certificate/diploma programs in Boston.

“I do want to go on to medical school”
“music is a HUGE part of who I am”

I have met a few premed students – these were mostly friends of both daughters who are in majors that overlap some with premed requirements.

In my experience premed students are VERY dedicated to premed. Between taking tough classes, getting high grades, and doing their premed shadowing / volunteering they are pretty much fully dedicated.

I know a few people who have made music their lives.

In my experience music majors and professors of music are quite dedicated to music.

I think that it is going to tough to combine the two. I certainly know engineers who play some music on the side and who play out in public from time to time. I suppose that this should be possible for a doctor. However, I think that you are going to need to be quite dedicated to have a “career worthy” success in either one by itself.

I would expect that the Berkelee College of Music would have classes you could take. I used to know students who took a summer class there. I used to take music lessons from someone who was a current graduate student there. Other current students will likely be offering lessons. Professors there probably offer lessons as a way to supplement their income.

However, playing a musical instrument well takes a commitment. I do not see how you will do this if you are a premed student.

@DadTwoGirls @happymomof1 Thanks for the reply! Yeah I see what you’re saying, thanks!

Thanks @airway1 !
