This Year Penn State will be auditioning 450 and plans to take 12-14.

the odds are scary.

Anybody know anything BoCo??

I agree…the odds of getting into one of these programs is so low! My D has had one audition so far and has several more in February. I am just trying to keep her healthy so she can do her best (and if she does, that is all we can hope for). It is amazing that these schools make their selections with such a short time with each applicant; at least when they audition for musicals, there is usually a callback! I’m hoping my D has chosen the best audition songs, since they only sing 16 - 32 bars of each. I imagine VERY talented students are turned away each year. I’m more nervous now than I was before!

U of Michigan accepts 23 to get 20 because people don’t turn down Michigan. By contrast Syracuse said it accepts 60 MT to yield 30.

Last year BOCO took ~ 55 but I do not remember how many auditioned, Elon took 28, CCM said they typically take 30 to get 20-24, PSU uses a waitlist after they take ~ 20 to get 12-14. Otterbein takes 8, B-W takes ~ 12- they have 13 thss year- 6 girls and 7 boys. I cannot remember a any more right now- brain freeze!

^^ttmom, do you mean this most recent class, as freshmen in fall 2007? i think i heard something from a prof there about this being their biggest class to date, 70something MTs…? their yield was higher than usual.

At our S’s school, all the BFA’s and BA’s in drama audition and two freshman were cast in leads in the major spring musical. At his school, there were 900 applicants for 13 spots last year. He’s happy with it.

Our s. got accepted into UMiami too, where they only took SIX students (3 boys 3 girls). He auditioned at 13 schools and got into 12 (Michigan the only exception, sadly, his top choice because he’d been to the summer program there). His buddy is a UMich grad and said the biggest class was 2006, 22 kids.

mamalot - congratulations on your S’s successes! I am sorry that he did not get into his first choice, but it looks like he has some great other options :)

Yes the numbers I posted were for the freshman class last year… My D got into BOCO and they did get more who accepted them back than they thought they would but I believe the class size is currently 60-70, maybe it is bigger. I do know that a friend of mine whose D is a fr there told me that they are going to “lean” the class out over the next year or so to get a more manageable size. hmmm. So they are taking less this year as someone told me Elon is also doing- taking a smaller class. Just remember, you can only go to one school and you will all -hopefully- get a school that is right*for you!

I didn’t mean 900 for MUSICAL Theatre. What a nitball! I meant 900 for all the drama programs… 300 for MT.
Sorry.
He really is ambivalent about how difficult a BFA is. He’s in class all day and has ALL the same requirements as a regular BA, then has a cabaret show (which IS paid, at least) and rehearsals every night but Sunday…but thank you so muhc. Your daughter is at Michigan, right?
Where he goes is a wonderful place… but not a conservatory. He couldn’t have borne that but might have learned more!

Silly me. The current freshen class numbers!!!

I’d forgotten how much I missed this board. Hard year. Having the first one go away to college and with so much difficulty around that and the stress of auditions (never thought we’d sit in the same room again). But everyone her is so nice!

I’ve been putting together a table of the likeliness of getting into each program. I have lots of holes in it, few schools are represented, and all of this information is from what people on this board have said - which is to say that it’s probably not 100% accurate (no offense!). I don’t know how the formatting will turn out in the comment, I’ll edit it if it’s impossible to understand. I determined the % chance of admission by the number accepted, not by the yield. If anyone can contribute to this (or correct any information here), I’d really appreciate it! Thanks!

Baldwin-Wallace Goal yield: 12
Ball State Approx. # Accepted: 18 % Chance of admission: 12 - 15%

U of Mich # Auditioning: 430-650 Accepted: 20-21 Yield: 18-19 Chance: 3% - 4.8%

That’s an interesting table – but since each school’s total yield includes both male and female students, I believe each individual’s chance would be about 1/2 of what you’ve stated. (Mind you, I was a theater major, not a statistics major – so I could be wrong!)

Update on James Madison – this year it looks like we will end up with an 18% to 19% admit rate in the BA Musical Theatre Concentration.

BoCo said they had more kids take them up on their acceptances last year so they would accept a few less this year, and they are going to use a wait list for the first time. I seem to remember them saying they would be aiming for 55 - 60, and would have about 35 on a waiting list.

PACE University said they were auditioning 650-800 for musical theatre, and hoping for a class of 20, they were taking 23-25! But they said last year they accepted 25, and had a class of 23.

Maybe I’m underestimating Pace, but that doesn’t sound right to me…that makes them more selective than CCM…
