Specify if I want to be Pre-Med..?

Just as the question reads, does an applicant have to specify they want to be Pre-Med…? Or is it discussed after enrolling/planning your schedule…? (Should I include it in the “Why Penn?” Essay…?)

Thanks!

i second that question loll

When I applied, I don’t recall the Penn supplement asking about the potential major (I could be very wrong though). There certainly wasn’t a question specifically asking premed or not. The Common App has a section asking about future careers, so you could definitely pick a medical profession to show that you are geared towards premed.

Sure, but connect it to your academic goals at large.

The Penn supplement does ask about a potential major though that doesnt not involve Pre-anything.

Thanks!

I went to the UPenn info session & tour a couple of weeks ago, and they said you don’t have to declare a major when applying. You do have to state, like as mentioned, which school you are applying though. The admissions officer told me that they don’t expect applicants to state a major because apparently 80% of the students change it sometime during their time at UPenn. I know, it’s a pretty large percentage, but supposedly true.

If you do want to state that you’re likely becoming a pre-med candidate in your essay, that’s fine. But you don’t have to state it in your application.

If you start doing research about all of the classroom and research opportunities availalbe to a premed (looking at majors like bio and BBB and checking out all of the different research facilities) it can make for a very strong “why Penn” essay compared to the dime a dozen ones they get about the applicant walking on Locust Walk.
