This is a question that i hope someone can answer for me. Today i ran for president of the speech and debate club and i lost, but i won my secondary position as public relations officer. Is that a good role to have in speech and debate? Do colleges look at it as being something really good or amazing because being the president is amazing, but never really heard of public relations. At least i won a position so i cant really complain, but if anyone could answer and tell me if public relations is good or average that would be great.

It all depends on what you do with the position.

The President job is simply average unless you actually impact the organization with it. The same can be said of a public relations officer.

If you make an impact on the organization and actually do something meaningful with your position, it’s a valuable leadership position. If it appears to just be a title, than it’s really nothing more than a title. Leadership titles in clubs are meaningless these days, as most people with these titles don’t actually do anything.

^ exactly. For every school with a debate team, there is a president of the debate team. Multiply the the number of schools by the number of activities and you have hundreds of thousands of presidents. (appx 37,100 high schools @ at least 10 activities each . . . ).

The title isn’t special. What you do with it is. So what can you do as public relations officer? You could start an endowment, to help fund trips to nationals or other major tournaments. You could arrange presentations for local service organizations. I’m sure you can think of other things as well . . .

You’ve received some great advice. As debate president myself, I’ll admit that the title means little. What matters is that my coach trusts me (and a few others without leadership positions) with the real responsibilities: fundraising, organizing tournaments, etc. Your goal is to do what you can for the team; your position hardly matters.

Thanks for all the feedback guys. Now that i know that i need to do something with my position I was wondering what else i can do as public relations in order to get noticed. Got2BeGreen named a couple of good ideas and i was wondering what else i could do and accomplish as public relations officer. I would really like to make an impact and do something great. So could you guys keep suggesting some ideas.
