I probably have to spend a extra year at my junior college cause some of the courses I’ve taken or about to take won’t transfer to the college I want to go to. Will this look bad when I apply to graduate schools like Columbia or any other well known school(s)?

This happens all the time. Don’t worry about it. Just keep getting good grades. That is what will matter down the line.

I think CC is the perfect place to take your time and explore. Our D enjoyed trying new subjects and classes in CC. She had no trouble transferring to USoCal.

It is probably quite common for non-traditional students to spend more than two years at community college before transferring to a four year school.

@ucbalumnus Actually I kinda am a traditional student. This is my first year of college ever.

Oh sure. It is common to take an extra year just because certain classes are hard to get. Unless you enter CC with a clear picture of what university you want to attend or that school has some sort of guaranteed transfer, it’s quite normal to end up with some units that don’t transfer (usually when you try to transfer into a private school.) I wouldn’t stress it.

@turtletime I’m aiming at a private school for gradute studies. The college I want to go to is instate and public.

CC for four years (earning ten associates degrees), transfer to a state school, now a PhD student at a private school ranked highly for his major:

If you are in your first year and know you want to transfer to an in-state public school, why are you taking classes that won’t transfer? Most CCs have a well documented transfer path to their State U affiliates. Most also have summer classes that would allow you to fill the gap.

If you need the extra time, so be it but, stop taking courses that won’t get you where you want to go.

My CC Requires people to take a placement test. I have to take preparation courses only in math. And the in state school that I want to transfer to doesn’t have a bridge program with that school.

Not a good idea if you are on government financial aid.
