We’re very fortunate in our library. The system is statewide and if a book is not available in our town it is sent over within a day or two for pickup. We also have a really nice ebook (and audiobook) library, most titles available as kindle downloads (works just like buying but they expire after 3 weeks or whatever it is) or the overdrive ebook format (requires an app but easy). I don’t buy ebooks anymore either, or regular books for that matter.
My problem is I rarely have time to read as much as I want to.
@abasket …true. That is much less than what I spend typically in a month. Plus, it is something I’ve been wanting for awhile and makes sense to purchase now at the latest. Ok…I don’t guilty now. Thanks!
I thought this thread was mindful (rather than impulsive or other) spending, not a place we are scolded for responding to a request on the thread. If I’m wrong, my humble apologies.
I have done a very small amount of spending this month on things I don’t really need. I would put it in the “mindful, yet slightly dopey” category. I don’t regret it, though.
So, kind of fell off. Favorite Anthropology 40% off sale items started and I could not resist. I really wanted to replace my blah black sweater earlier but did not like anything. Not really anything wrong with it just not happy with it. So I ordered one I think I will like. But in the spirit of this month I did put back the other 2 items I had in my cart. They were more impulsive and I did think of this.
^^ you were mindful. You put back the other things you really didn’t want so much. You thought about it. I think that’s what this thread is all about. It’s not that we can’t spend…it’s what it’s for and why we are doing it. Replacing a black sweater you don’t like? Sure, it’s a smart move while it’s on sale. Buying it just because it’s on sale and you already have a sweater you really like in the same color…that’s mindless spending.
Our previous library system has a very nice ebook selection so I was sad that my card was expiring at the end of 2017. Obviously I couldn’t go in person to renew it. Much to my surprise and delight, it got renewed automatically. Our new system is not as good but between the two systems I can have 10 ebooks checked out and 10 more holds. There is a used bookstore in the area that has tons of paperbacks I like but they’re half price which is still more than free, my preference.
@HImom, thank you for the links. Found the first one on my own but, alas, they’re all sold out. Second link isn’t quite right for me but I appreciate your help.
@conmama, started using that lotion about a month ago. We’ll have to compare notes down the road.
Yes, this thread is about attempting to curtail mindless spending but it’s for each of us to decide what that means. For some it can be a full on freeze and others to just not buy what’s not on the list when one goes to Costco. No apologies from me as I learn about a possible perfect ski jacket.
Online I put a nice winter coat and a new ipad that was on sale in my cart. I did not put my cc number in and just let it sit there. The satisfaction of having it in the cart to hold onto knowing I won’t go through with the purchase. Eventually I close the page and no purchase take place. No money spent so no harm done. No purchases made today. Small celebration.
So I picked out a Patagonia down jacket today, deeply discounted and several people told me it looked nice on me…was wearing it in queue for the check out. Then… I took it off and put it back, decided I didn’t need another down jacket and walked out the store !!! This is very unlike me and I feel so relieved because I don’t need another one, have at least a dozen similar jackets at home.
Congrats, @cbreeze! H tries to have us give away 2 items for every one item we purchase. Sometimes we are able to and sometimes we aren’t. I have been very mindful of anything I purchase these days.
I’m going to 3 weddings this year. I had briefly considered whether to purchase anything but am leaning toward just shopping my closet and perhaps figuring out how to use different accessories for the outfits. The folks getting married aren’t my kids so I probably won’t be in many photos (even though one of the brides is my niece).
Good for you @cbreeze and @HImom . Sometimes I just want to wear something new, but think “ what is the occasion? Is it that that important I have something new…nobody there has even seen me in my xxx clothes.
