Spending freeze February

I feel like I’ve failed miserably this month. A couple of big expenses, a treadmill and then my tv broke. Now I’m broke!
I also bought a couple of small items, I wear camisoles every day and bought a few.

I also found some shirts for my H at a great discount, I always buy golf shirts when I find them under $15. Found him 6 shirts yesterday, Greg Norman shark gold shirts, nautica and Tommy Hilfiger, all under $15.

Instead of a savings month, it’s been a spending month.

I have to say, paying credit card bills in March was much less painful after spending freeze February! I actually had to check twice because with the money left over in our checking account, I was sure I had missed one! Nope!

I agree! Our Visa hasn’t been that low in years! I think a lot of us fell off the wagon a bit this month @deb922 . You are not alone! I’m one that fell for the 40% off like that linked article mentioned. However, I did find a super cute summer top for final sale at Loft for $3.44!

I wen told a little crazy at Nordstrom Rack online today. I ordered close to $1000 worth of stuff, but much will eventually go back. I got a couple of pairs of shoes and a couple of dresses, that may work for a summer wedding. I also got a top I will likely keep. I’ve been good about not buying much lately, so I’m Ok with these purchases.
Plus, my husband got me a purse for my bday, but I know Macy’s will have it on sale for 30% off tomorrow, so I haven’t used it yet - I will return/rebuy it tomorrow. It’s a coach bag, so the savings will be 75 bucks or so.

Now I have to go to Nordstrom Rack…thanks a lot @1214mom …haha!

That article (post 419 I think) really resonated although wasn’t surprising. Still on the hunt for a packable down, I came across one at 32 degrees online for $40 instead of $100 (not sure who would pay $100 but, at $40 it was a good deal). It arrived and it was too big. They don’t do exchanges so I emailed to ask if they’d match the price and was told to buy the replacement and email again and they’d adjust it. Went online to order the new one and it was on sale for $50. So, I will ask for the $10 adjustment but i’m guessing that jacket is always on sale at some level.

I had to hunt around at NR online too but, fortunately, didn’t buy anything.

So far, no mindless spending this month but, between the remodel and the upcoming trip, I think the endorphins I get from spending are flying high without it.

The good news is I went to a clothing store this week armed with a coupon and credit and left empty-handed (haven’t been clothing shopping since the holidays - don’t need anything - my closet it full).

The bad news is that my daughter’s iphone is dying and I will be spending big bucks replacing it (it will also serve as her birthday gift.)

^^Phones these days are really a necessary item. A phone that is dying is not going to be much help!!!

I didn’t plan any vacations on my snow day - I guess that kind of counts for this thread. But in all honesty, if I could have booked a trip to Hawaii using a reasonable number of points with less than 2 layovers I probably would have.

The little one visited last night and evaporated with my Chloe pumps. The empty slot in my shoe closet is singing a siren song… must resist.

@kiddie, are you sure just a battery replacement won’t fix the dying phone? It worked for some of us and $29 is much cheaper than alternatives.

We reviewed the litany of problems with her phone - battery issues, touch screen issues, chip in face-plate, back-light not working, etc. It is almost 2 1/2 years old and our experience is that they only last around 2 years (so I am considering the last few months a “gift” from the iphone gods.)

I have a big trip coming up to visit my daughter who is studying abroad, we’re traveling around for 2 weeks. I got the airfare free (CC points), but am paying for rental cars, Airbnbs, food, etc (but am doing very well with those price-wise). This trip is a lot of the reason I’ve been extra-frugal these past few months.

So.

She wants to do a lot of hiking, and we are considering one very high and long hike, so I needed to get some new hiking boots, I thought. I asked for recs on FB, went to a couple of different stores, nearly spent $125 (because they were on sale - 50% off from $250! How can I pass up such a deal!), but didn’t pull the trigger.

Last night, I looked down at my shoe shelf and pulled out my comfy broken-in but somewhat damaged hiking boots. I wore them out and about yesterday then took them off last night and examined them. The rubber sole (that wraps up over the sides a bit) had separated from the shoe along a lot of the outside edges. I got out a tube of Shoe Goo and re-attached it, left it overnight. Today I put some more along the edges to make sure it’s really sealed. Later I’ll clean them and spray-waterproof them again.

Like new, but already broken in  Yay shoe goo!

Good for you @OHMomof2 ! That’s the spirit I need for motivation! You probably feel, enter about not spending the money for that. I have Zero guilt in shopping on vacations, it’s a nongulity pleasure for me. So now you have that money to go buy something really pretty on vacation!! I walked out of Macys today, almost buying $170 worth of bathing suits I want, don’t need. They were 30% off…I need to remember that’s just to catch us. I need to really decide if I want to spend the money here or on vacation in a few weeks!

More likely a nice meal out or a boat trip or something, but absolutely!!

I may be lucky - iphone screen was replaced for free (still under warranty from getting a shattered screen fixed) and it may have done the job.

I went and got a consult from two orthodontists to straighten my teeth. I had braces a million years ago, in the days when they didn’t tell you to wear your retainers for life.

It would be very spendy to get my teeth straight again. I don’t think I can justify the cost when I think of that money in terms of other things it could be used for.

Thank you for this thread. It’s helping me THINK.

Spending money on orthodontia is health care, not consumption. My dentist told me that if my bite didn’t get corrected that he’d have to start pulling teeth. It was a necessary expense. You really don’t want to let a problem get worse.

Now that they are straight I’m looking at whitening, which is consumption. But what am I saving it for?

^^I think there’s huge value in feeling good about yourself and presenting your best self to the world. If having whiterr teeth will make you feel better and more confident and you have the funds, for me, that’s not mindless spending.

I bought whitening trays from the dentist years ago before the OTC ones came out. Crest strips. It was a great investment. I felt so much better with my teeth whitened. Much more confident in my smile and to wear white tops!
