Our December selection is Spinning Silver by Nebula award-winning author Naomi Novik. The CC Book Club is exploring new territory with this selection, which NPR calls “one of the year’s strongest fantasy novels.” Spinning Silver is inspired by the fairy tale “Rumpelstiltskin," but takes the old story to new places, resulting in "an affirming, uplifting, multilayered, and wholly original novel, filled with indomitable women who doubt themselves and stumble and get up more determined than ever; slippery villains who flash with unexpected depths just as you avert your gaze; and breathtaking, world-shattering magic.” (Barnes and Noble)
I’m starting Spinning Silver today. I figure I can read at leisure if I allow myself some time. It looks really good. I’m looking forward to both book and discussion.
Listening to the audiobook, free from the library and, thus far, loving it. Only on chapter 2, but an audiobook has to be really interesting to keep me coming back in fits and spurts of time.
Jumping in to book club for the first time. I have Spinning Silver on hold from the library; in the meantime, I read Uprooted, by the same author. A long book, but I really enjoyed it. I’m looking forward to SS.
Just started reading it today and am about 1/2 way into the book. It reminds me of my childhood, getting absorbed by different worlds. Yay for public libraries!
Just started it last night and am so far enjoying it. Kids will be with their dad’s family over Thanksgiving, so a quiet weekend with a small meal and a good book (and perhaps a little shopping thrown in). Can’t wait!
