<p>I think this is a great idea and I hope that more airlines implement the charge. Maybe it will deter people from bringing the ridiculous size and number of carryon items.</p>
<p>People have been bringing more carryons because otherwise they’d have to pay to check the baggage. Before airlines started imposing fees for checked baggage, most people’s carryons were very reasonable.</p>
<p>After all, people who are going on trips need to bring things with them.</p>
<p>What’s next? Charging people for the air they breathe on the plane?</p>
<p>Most of my flying is done on Air Canada which has not charged for checked baggage. The carry-on problem exists there just as much as on other airlines. People have been abusing the carry-on rules for years. It’s ridiculous to see people wheeling on bags as carry-on. It shouldn’t be allowed.</p>
<p>I. Love. My. Star. Alliance. Silver. Card. Gets me free baggage and priority boarding on all United, US Airways, Continental and Air Canada flights (for North America anyway)</p>
<p>Even with free bag privileges though I carry on a rollaboard so I’m not SOL if they lose my bags.</p>
<p>It’s just a further way they can cut the initial advertising of the price of a ticket. You see their base price is $49 from New York to Ft. Lauderdale, so you don’t go to Continental or Delta. Then you realize later the $49 turns into $94 after the carry-on fee, $104 to get a seat ahead of time, $114 to check-in online, etc. etc. But they got your attention in the first place.</p>
<p>I wish US Air, which is what we use mostly, would charge for carry ons and not checked bags. Would sure do a lot to decrease the amount people try to carry on.</p>
<p>I read this today in our local paper and it is timely for me. While the convenience to my local airport can’t be beat, I am not a big fan of Spirit…their online booking is a pain in the you know what…they are constantly trying to charge fees for every step. Just let me book my ticket without trying to charge me to check a bag or to choose my seat…I for don’t care where I sit when I am flying solo to Boston…it’s an hour flight so who really cares ?
I happen to be flying with Spirit this weekend , but I will NOT renew my $9 fare club membership…couldn’t use it the way I wanted to really…looks like it is back to Philly and Southwest for me
And I am not one of those annoying people that cram way too much into an overhead bin…that is annoying</p>
<p>We use Spirit frequently, it is one of the few airlines that flies a nonstop into Myrtle Beach where MIL lives. We’ve sent the kids down to see her, and we can rest easy that they won’t have any issues with connecting flights. Plane takes off, plane lands. Done.</p>
<p>The only down side is that the nonstop is out of LaGuardia, around 2 1/4 hours from home. Of course, we live 10 minutes from Bradley (northern CT). Still, factoring in time spent on connections, it still takes less time to drive to LGA for the direct flight.</p>
<p>I do get REALLY tired of the add-on charges though. A $79 flight + luggage + the PRIVELEGE of choosing your seat, + god-knows-what-else…I wish they’d just quote me the whole thing in the ticket price. It would save me some cursing. :rolleyes: If I read the link properly now it will be a $49 flight + luggage + carryon …</p>
<p>I have been watching spirit for the past month fares going up and down daily. It is the only airline that flys nonstop from my area into Atlantic City (which is a big time saver for us). This new fee does not make me happy. :(</p>
