I got an email at 8pm tonight that my 730am flight for tomorrow is cancelled! Are you serious? Hotel booked, car booked, vacation time taken, supplies purchased to bring dog on plane and it’s cancelled! Their email reads as though I don’t get $ back and can rebook within a certain time window. Seriously??

We regret to inform you that your trip from Philadelphia, PA (PHL) to Myrtle Beach, SC (MYR) on September 29, 2013 has been affected by a delay or flight cancellation. View current flight status.

If you wish to cancel or modify your reservation, you will not be charged a change fee or fare difference if:
You book the same departure and arrival airports
Your flight is rebooked within selected dates (choose ‘Change reservation’ to view dates with the same price)
The change fee will be waived for the first modification that is made to this reservation. Any changes thereafter may be subject to applicable change fees and fare differences.

Guessing they only have a flight or two a day on that route, too. I would be on the phone to them asking them about routing through another city tomorrow or something. Spirit is CHEAP – they are one of the airlines that charge you to bring a carry on onto the plane. They sure aren’t going to reimburse you for any expenses…

IF I wanted to go a day later I might have been able to, but I am afraid that it could be cancelled, or the return trip could be. I could have tried a different airport (if they let me for same $) but the return flight was 10pm, and didn’t know what we’d do all day after check out (with small dog). I guess I got what I paid for…never again

Here is the UPDATE:

On hold for 30 minutes. She says it was cancelled due to weather and tried to give us a credit for the future. I said they couldnt/wouldnt/shouldnt cancel for the weather 12 hours before, that a delay would be more likely (except for obvious hurrincanes etc). She asked her supervisor (escalated) and they approved my refund. I still dont believe the weather story, unless they are flying tin cans…

I am still fuming though. It cost me some $ to cancel my hotel deposit but luckily I ws able to cancel in time to get most of it back. I was so excited to go with my hubby and our little dog. We were flying because I get anxious about my kids being home and the temptation for them to make bad decisions(party!) while I’m gone. It was going to give me more time on the beach and less time in the car.

I know they go to parties at homes with absent parents and I don’t want to be that house. Not such a problem now that one is older and I think finally mature enough, and old enough not to need an absent parent (over 21, friends who are on their own.)

Plan B is to drive to VA beach. Hope the dog doesn’t mind. She doesn’t know it, but she will like it better than her airplane carrier (never flew with her.)

I suppose I should edit my title since they didn’t steal my money (assuming refund goes thru) but they did ruin my trip and hubby’s vacation time. Not the trip I’ve been waiting months for. Oh well, I have to move on. Make the best of it. Hope it’s not a sign that I shouldn’t be going…

Wow…that is unbelievable…as you said, aside from a major hurricane hitting the area you are going to, cannot see where this would be your problem and not theirs.

I flew Spirit and it was a friggin nightmare. I am 5’2" and my knees dug into the seat in front of me. I was on the aisle and the young couple next to me were very upset as their seat were both filthy and torn to pieces. We all felt as if the plane was going to simply fall apart midair. We took pictures and planned to put them on line when we realized that this was just another normal Spirit Air trip. I honestly would not even take free tickets to anywhere from them, they are that disgusting.
Be happy with your drive!

While not ideal, could you have driven? Per google maps, it’s under 9 hours from Philly airport to Myrtle Beach. Not great, but doable. Assuming you would drive an hour to the airport, get there 1-2 hours early, then fly 2 hours, spend an hour getting luggage/rental car, you’re only off 3-4 hours, which could have a weather delay.

Ps - just looked at weather map. Perfectly clear on east coast. They are full of $hit. Lodge a complaint w FAA. It won’t help you , but may get them fined.

Our 2012 spring break trip was to Puerto Rico on Spirit. While we were waiting to board our flight home, a thunderstorm came through and the flight was delayed. They informed us that we would miss our connecting flight in FLL and that nothing was available for 5 days. We ended up booking another airline from FLL and I vowed never to fly them again.

Earlier this month I decided to give them another try out of LGA, as they were half of what other airlines were charging (and I’m an idiot). Our flight was delayed one hour due to a mechanical problem. Then we boarded the plane and taxied around the runway for 2 hours. Finally then brought us back to the gate and let us off the plane (Thank you for the new law that has a cap on that time limit!). We were told that we they were still “hoping” to get out that night, but couldn’t guarantee. They blamed everything on the weather, when in fact they had missed their take-off slot due to mechanical problems. After a five hour delay, we finally were able to take-off.

I think the biggest problem with Spirit and maybe other small airlines, is the limited schedules. If they only fly out one time each day, you’re in trouble if that flight gets delayed/cancelled.

There can be a weather issue in another part of the country that is holding the plane there. It’s a complicated system and NOT one that is a sure bet for the traveler. Terrible airline, though.

NJres, they didn’t do anything for me to not trust them, I just haven’t given them enough to hang themselves at MY house. I know they have attended the “parents away” parties at others houses and just don’t really know if they’ve dreamed of having one.

Nj2011mom,
I didn’t want to drive because it’s the first long trip with the dog (yorkie mix). We have driven to myrtle beach several times when the kids were younger and we found out we could get a nicer place, warmer water and lizards to catch for less $ than NJ. Of course my dog didn’t “go” yesterday, so anytime she got whiny we had to stop in case she had to go. We made it to VA beach in a reasonable time with a few brief stops. She hardly slept the whole way. I do not like it here as much as Myrtle. Few, if any restaurants let the pets even on the patios, yet several large hotels accept dogs, and I’ve seen a lot on the beach etc. I guess we will do take out tonight, at least it’s a mini suite. Myrtle has several spots I planned to go to, and I am familiar with it. It also has nicer sand and water. This sand is rather brown, like a baseball field sort of. Not the whiter sand of Jersey and also Myrtle B.

So this, will be our new adventure. At least it will be warm and we are away. Might try again to fly in march or April. On US air!

Allegiant airlines did the same thing to family members who were traveling to my niece’s wedding. No weather problems, just an insufficiently booked flight, I guess. Rescheduled for the next day. They made it to the wedding but missed the rehearsal and rehearsal dinner.
