Splurges That Weren't Worth It

That other thread is too nice. Here’s one about things we splurged on, but wished we hadn’t.

Mine: a pair of Mephisto shoes. Wore out immediately, and weren’t all that magically comfortable in the first place.

This is going back a few years, but I wish I hadn’t splurged on that custom-made crib bedding (bumper and dust ruffle) right before my DD was born (she’s 17 now). I don’t think she appreciated it very much (lol) and the ones I see at my favorite French store (Target) nowadays are just as adorable and cost a fraction of what I spent.

My only pair of Monolo Blahniks. I want my $750 back.

Botox. It wore off.

The Memory Foam mattress. Cost a lot and my dh hates it.

Some kind of manual chopper thingy from Pampered Chef. It’s been sitting on my desk for more than a year waiting for me to return it and get my $70 back. Maybe I’ll just donate the damned thing…

“My only pair of Monolo Blahniks. I want my $750 back.”

That’s the reason I buy mine deeply discounted and only after careful consideration of the style and fit. If you got yours at Nordstrom, take them back!

Mr. B bought a pen/writing pads device that were supposed to record lectures in synch with taking notes… $300, and he never opened the damn thing.

Bought a pair of special ortho type sports shoes. Very uncomfortable and will likely donate. They were specially expensive too!

The Ferragamo dress shoes I bought. 600 bucks and they squeak.

A $350 pair of trifocals that absolutely suck when a pair of $10 reading glasses were all I needed, and work better.

a $100 kuhl sweater, the most expensive clothing I’d ever bought. It shrank, and the replacement they happily supplied proceeded to shred and pill and fuzz. Couldn’t wear it out of the house.

Custom cabinets, expensive Mohawk carpet, Flexsteel La-Z-Boy type sofa, and pedestal for front-load washer.

I couldn’t wait until I was old and established financially, so I could buy “better” quality items. Now that I’m here, I’m disappointed. Most of it is marginally better, or not at all. I’ve decided to buy medium grade and replace more often in the future.

@busdriver11 - exactly the same!!
Had a pretty conservative optometrist & he never felt I needed glasses. Then he retired. Went to a new doctor & she prescribed bifocals- a very weak prescription. Wore them 1 time & went back to my readers.

We need a thread for things we *wished *we had splurged on.

We should have spent more on a larger engagement ring diamond and less on the now outdated 18k yellow gold setting.

This is going to be about as first world as one could get, but we splurged on a trip to Israel for our family after my kids had their bar / bat mitzvahs. They had never been out of the US and this was a Really Huge Deal. We were redeeming miles. We redeemed business class miles for the kids and first-class miles for ourselves (American Airlines / British Airways, ORD-LHR-TLV). First class was a real disappointment. The only difference was that the seats were angled, so H and I were farther apart from one another versus if we had been in business. We wasted a lot of miles on that and said - never again, business class is more than luxurious enough to go overseas – first class is a waste. So there you have it. Probably not the response sought, LOL.

Spent a lot of money on “good” living room and dining room furniture, but I don’t know that I could say it’s worth it. It’s good quality, but my kids are likely not going to want it.

Wish we bought in Berlin right after the Wall came down. Cudda bought property for a song…

Having one of the highly touted hamburgers at expensive restaurants, having had them at some places here in NYC, my local diner’s burger is a heckuva a lot better, they use grass fed beef, have a great toasted roll, and it costs about a fifth as much:).

$3k sofa I bought 4 years ago when we moved. The linen type fabric has pilled, the cushions deflated and I hate the tiffany blue color that I picked because I was tired of boring brown and I wanted to “be adventurous”, not to mention that long haired gray cat hairs basically scream " look this is where the cat likes to sit". With a D16 and a D18 buying a new sofa is NOT in the budget and I am going to have to live with this one for another 6 years.

@Madison Wish splurge…a hand made natural stained cherry desk my husband and I saw shortly after we got married. It was $900 and we thought it was too extravagant. We talk about it and how we wish we had bought it at least once a year.
