Splurges That Weren't Worth It

Kohler plumbing fixtures when we renovated the house about 20 years ago. Within the first 5 years, I had to replace most of the fixtures (with the exception of the toilets), the faucets, shower controllers, all had to be replaced, I found that American Standard and Delta lasted a long time. We also have a kohler whirlpool tub where the faucets are leaking, and the faucet base may need to be replaced…but Kohler dropped this model like 15 years ago, amd that part is not available, so may be stuck with trying to replace it with another unit, which is going to be really expensive…you would figure they would understand things like these kind of things are around for a long time, and might need parts…

Having my leaky old gutters redone with leaf proof gutters. The rain just slides right over them and they drip more than the old ones leaked!

^I just had the “leaf proof gutters.” Sigh

We splurged on a house with a fireplace at Williamsburg on our honeymoon but they wouldn’t let us light a fire (June, but hey we are from HI). We switched hotels after 1st nite and stayed nearby at fraction of price.

Splurged on room with view of Niagra Falls, only it was so foggy and misty there was really no view other than fog and mist, but what are honeymoons for anyway?

@4kidsdad My boss at the time had a girlfriend who had a CPA firm. He was a CPA himself, just not a tax accountant. He was saying that she always saves him a lot in taxes. We purchased our first house that year, and I was thinking that maybe I am overlooking something and that is why we have to send such a large check with our tax return every year.

That expensive exercise equipment for the house. Compared to the price of a pack of fancy clothes hangers…

@SouthFloridaMom9, I have a Thermidor range that was put in by the previous owners of our house in 1995. I love it, because you can adjust the flame low enough to keep pots simmering, unlike a lot of gas ranges, but I have learned that later models just aren’t as good. I am hoping it doesn’t die until we sell the house to someone else!

I have a Thermador gas cooktop build in 1999. Love it!!! So easy to clean, and so cook-friendly. Mr. wants to replace it with a ss one - the stove wars will erupt!!!

I think appliance makers figured out that if you build 'em to last forever, you can’t sell new ones…

@labegg Post #19 (Wish splurge) That sounds lovely. I saw one I wanted about 10 years ago, new, for $2200. Fortunately I found a barely used one (identical) on Craigslist for $600 7 years ago. Now it is $3k new! (Link below).

H and I bought our first house shortly after we were married. We knew we would be moving in 3 years as H was then an army officer. The town it was in had a lot of overbuilding at that time and it took nearly a year to sell. We were living in another part of the country by then and paying rent on top of the house payment. And did I mention that I spent a few months unemployed while looking for a job in the new place?

I had glass cut for my dining room table, but bad spills still manage to make it under the leaves. Still worth it!

Not worth it: My front-loading “energy efficient” Whirlpool washer (I hate it, but I think I’d hate all front loaders.)
Juvederm injections - Painful and only last about 3 weeks for me
Hartmann luggage - Falls apart AND stains easily

I always heard Thermidor was good stuff. I will say, in reference to the post above, my gas range is the favorite appliance out of everything. Even there it hasn’t aged well. I’m really disappointed with the dishwasher, fridge, and microwave. I think it’s true - appliance makers don’t make stuff the way they used to.

Speaking of appliances, we bought a highly rated and raved about Kenmore Callypso washer… Expensive new tech! It died 7 and a change years after we bought it. When I complained to the sales person at Sears, his response was, “Oh wow! It lasted THAT long?” Apparently, the washer had a design flaw that made most of them disintegrate after just a couple of years… The repair people gave it the nickname “The Collapso.” It actually never washed stuff right…

Another not worth the price splurge: iPad… Used it very infrequently… But my Surface is the most amazing machine!

=))

Our 8 go Kenmore dryer neneedededed repairs last week. Repair guy said it was “pretty old.” It replaced a 27 yo machine. He told me that Samsung washers and dryers are only making it about three years. Good for his business, bad for cknsumers.

I hate our GE fridge. Eight yeard old and most of the plastic parts have cracked and died. Gaskets are trashed. Am using velcro to close the fridge.

Every piece of antique furniture my ex bought. I have a very small french table over 200 years old that he bought for 6000 20 years ago, a side table with marble top for over 10K.

The completely ridiculously over-the-top, insanely expensive vacation I planned in a last-ditch effort to save my marriage. Didn’t work.

@oldfort – if we want to expand this to useless cr@p our ex-spouses bought during the marriage, I promise I can outdo everyone on this board a million times over. (He collected contemporary art, some by established artists but way too much by emerging artists, and he was quite obsessive about it).

The expensive purse sitting in the closet for special occasions. Definite buyers remorse. Felt too guilty to use it. Thinking of consigning it but the consignment fees would take a good chunk of the money made.
Have no remorse spending on DD things but always cut back on myself to make up for it.
