The Marriage Plot! Jane Austen would be proud. Well done, Mr. Fellowes, well done.
Is this a thread for people who have seen the entire season?
I think so - I admit I cheated and watched on simplyjune, so I haven’t been commenting on the regular thread. I am watching it again as it airs on PBS. I’m really enjoying the costumes. I loved the green dress Lady Edith wore the last episode.
I can’t get enough of Mary’s gold lace & turquoise jewel-tone dress when she smooched Henry Talbot in the rain.

Yes, it is a thread for people who have seen the entire season. I thought it was very well done.
Though I thought the series was very well resolved overall, there were a few things I didn’t buy: (1) the retention of Thomas as the new butler. After all the issues they’ve had with him, I don’t think they’d want him in that position. People don’t change that much. And (2) Mary’s acceptance of the car mechanic shop / car salesman idea. There’s no way in hell someone in Mary’s position would accept that, and Mary’s snobbier than the average aristocrat.
Wonder how much time Edith will have to run her magazine. Keeping up that giant castle will be a full time job. I loved the looks on Robert and Cora’s faces as they walked through those halls! The place made Downton Abbey look positively cozy!
We used lived in a house w really high ceilings. In the summer it was great, but it was miserable in the winter.
I can’t imagine heating a castle in scotland in the wintertime…
One of the things that has always bothered me about the series is the sleeveless, scanty dresses the ladies wear. No matter WHAT time of year, I think that IRL they would have been wearing a lot more clothes! At the very least a shawl or sweater. I remember what I wore as a British schoolgirl in Surrey, which is warmer than Yorkshire.
I wish there would be a line of dresses based on DA. Or, the costume designers could start an on line shop.
My D is very excited about the upcoming Dressing Downton exhibit coming to the Driehaus Museum in Chicago. She has tickets for the exhibition and the tea.
Jeoulous. Sounds great.
Hooray - I get to join this thread! I finished the series on DVD last night. It will be fun to watch DH enjoy as he move through at PBS pace. After my DVDs arrived, I knew I would be finishing the whole thing as soon as I wanted - I wondered if I would have felt more tension, especially as regards Edith marriage or lost chance of marriage, if I’d had to wait a week to see what was happening.
I was surprised at the Carson line. Right at the beginning of that episode, I noticed some shaking as he handled some papers, but other than that, the condition came out of left field for me.
How sweet for Mr. Molesley. Julian really built his character into something quite fine - I’d thought Molesley was nice, but wishy-washy early on.
I didn’t like the Daisy character development. I never believed her revolutionary actions - seemed too much for a servant girl in her time and place to behave in this manner. Maybe if she’d been a shop girl, or at a pub, or attending meetings like Branson had in earlier seasons I would have found her public displays credible, but not shouting at the people who employed her in the context of their home or the estate sale. I never adjusted to the childish voice she has. She also never seemed to age throughout the series. I’ll have to go back and look at Season 1, but I don’t recall any physical maturation that would be natural with a young woman over those years. Ah well - disliking one character out of the 6 seasons still leaves a good percentage of positives.
I’ve never liked Daisy much.
