Sport and Wellness Scholars/Morill Tower

My son has been accepted to OSU (pre-business major) and was also recently admitted to the Sport & Wellness Scholars Program (his first choice was business scholars). I was wondering if any current OSU students or parents had any comments about this particular scholars program and the dorm where it is housed (Morill Tower). There are definite advantages to being part of the Scholars program. Is there a downside to being part of this or any other scholars program? I know that Morill Tower is further away from classes and other dorms, which may not be that much of an issue. Some of the rooms in Morill are also quads…can you request not to be in a quad? I think that this program is a two year commitment…do you stay in the same room and keep the same roommate for the two years?

My S is a current freshman in on of the scholars programs. Unless they have made a change, here is how it goes: They are required to live in the dorm that houses that particular scholars program for the first year. The one my son is in is a 4 year program. After this freshman year they can live where ever they want. I know my S will be living on campus a 2nd year but does not have to live in the same building or have the same roommates.

One of the biggest plusses of the scholars program is the priority scheduling. Now keep in mind-honors students have priority scheduling university wide, scholars students have priority scheduling within their class rank. I am not sure how much of a difference that makes. We went to his orientation super early and were able to schedule everything he wanted/needed. For 2nd semester I think his scheduling window opened up a few days before the rest of the freshmen. He will be scheduling his fall semester classes in a couple of weeks and the bad part is he will be in class and won’t be able to get online to schedule for about 2 hours after the window opens. We will see how that goes. Hopefully he will have a 2nd plan in place if he doesn’t get exactly what he wants right away. Trust me-he has enough pre-requiste and gen ed classes to take, I am sure he can find something.

They do stress that you do not need to be in that particular major to be in a certain scholars program. So if he is majoring in business, but in the sports and wellness scholars program, it shouldn’t have any effect and may give him some variety. I think it is a good program if the kids are interested. Should not be a huge time committment and makes a large campus a bit smaller.

As for Morill Tower, I know that is one of the dorms my S had no interest in at all. He did not like the set up of floor plan even on paper. I have not seen them in person. I don’t think it would be bad. From what I understand, it might be 8 people in a room-you have a lounge area, then that breaks off into 4’s and each has a study room and a bedroom. Some bedrooms have 4 students, some have 2. And there is a bathroom in there somewhere. You can always call housing and ask. Trust me-they are very nice, have answered all of my questions, and I am sure have heard it all. :-)

Good luck to your S!!
