Sports at Prep schools

One of the sports coAches told me there was 17 kids applying thus year for thAt sport, does that seem low or high to you?
Because I found it surprisingly low, he said 17-20,I don’t remember clearly cause I met with him a while ago.

All depends on the size of the school and the sport. 17 boys with experience in fencing would be a bonanza at a small school, as would 17 female squash players. Most kids don’t even start these sports until high school.

A school which traditionally fielded 4 boys soccer teams would be in trouble if they had only 17 male applicants with an interest in soccer.

Also remember that “applying for that sport” might be different from “would play that sport if admitted”. The coach may simply be refering to the number of kids on his or her radar, IOW, players he or she considers possible recruiting prospects.

I should add that at the athletic forum at one open house my child spoke to coaches in all 3 sports s/he plays and had a terrible time getting a word in edgewise with the coach of a commonly played sport because of the crowd of kids surrounding him. When s/he approached the coach of a less commonly played sport the relief on the part of the coach at being approached by a kid with experience in the sport was palpable. At the end of the day we snuck a peak at the coach’s sign-up list and were amused to see that the only 3 kids who had visited that coach were kids from our child’s school.

He said it was the ones that were interested in playing and have played before, this school has about 120 per grade and the sport is hockey so does 20 hockey applicants seem big or small, I believe they get the same amount of applicants as a school like loomis or Berkshire would
Ideas?

What schools are you applying to?

I am applying to nmh,Taft, loomis, hochkiss And a few others within the same tier

So do you think 17-20 I to small?

Well, I know 4 kids who went to NMH from my team last year, and are on the varsity. I think it would depend on which grade the most kids are applying for, because even if there is more than twenty players applying for freshman year, only a select few are gonna be playing varsity from that group of 20.

So I don’t think it’s thaaaaaaat small if that’s how many applicants are applying for a particular grade, but if it’s for all grades then it is small.

Its for all the grades, but I was wondering is that also how they make the decision like they will only take X amount of hockey players X amount of soccer players, ect…

The coaches have told me that they have 2 or 3 pushes which they can use to definitely get a player accepted, but I think for players that Aren’t recuits, they are just sort of normal applicants. So I think they can take as many as they want. (I am a hockey recruit)

Yeah, I am a hockey recruit for 1 or 2 of the schools and the others have just said that they would “love to have me there.”
I was wondering if a coach says to you “You played great in the game so I just wanted to know how school was going”- is this a sign that they want you at there school

Yes I’d say that’s a good sign. The emails I’ve received from the coaches of Exeter Andover Deerfield choate and Milton have given me hope since i didn’t do insanely well on the ssat. I’d say the best one I’ve gotten was from Exeter where the coach said choose Exeter and number 48 will be ordered. Hopefully that’s a good sign  good luck!

That’s a great sign! Good luck!
