Hey, do you think that it would be crazy to sing a song from Spring Awakening for a college audition?

Most people will advise you to stay away from shows that are currently running. Personally, I would say if you can deliver the song as well as or better than the original actor, go for it. But that’s not an easy thing to do, so be sure you are honest with yourself.

Also, consider the fact that Spring Awakening is very specific in terms of sound. The songs don’t really show alot about vocal range, nor do they really give an indication of potential for vocal growth . Many programs are looking for more classic material… so, make sure to really look at what the schools are asking for.

I think Spring Awakening is somewhat different than other shows in the sense that most of the score was written for 16-22 year olds.

It’s different than trying to scream a song from “Wicked”

As far as I know, and according to Amazon, the vocal selection book isn’t out yet. Does anyone know differently?

I say go for it.

I would choose hearing someone sing a song from Spring Awakening over trying to scream a song from “Wicked” any day! :)

If you do choose to sing something from Spring Awakening, I would make sure that your other song selection really shows you off vocally (as well as from an acting standpoint)… also, if a school is looking for a classic song as well… make sure that your other selection fits that bill.

Screaming any song is a bad idea. ;)

Thanks for the vocal health watch, NMR - of course I agree with you totally!!! :)
